"No, you gave me a 100 baht" says 7/11 staffer after being handed 1,000 baht

I don't think this is something common at a 7/11, that girl thought would get away with an old person, that's all. All the 7/11's stores I went here in Thailand they say out loud how much you giving them. It's a shame.

Funny, I just came from a 7-11, and was aware of this news,  Bought a few things (5-6 items), paid with a 1000b bill.  Made sure the purchase was on the screen, the items made sense, and the change provided, matched what was on the display...all was good. But my spidy senses were tingling....

Although 7/11 refused to comment, the footage has worked it's way into the public domain.

Many places one would have been told the CCTV not working.

Mistakes happens, 7-11 Staff are not machines.

If you are permanently living in Thailand, get a electronic payment card from 7-11, and you can recharge and use. You won't get those Satangs collection anymore.

If you watch the video, it is clear this was deliberate, not a mistake.

This happened to me, not in 7-11 but a PEA office. My electric bill was just over 600 baht so I gave a 1,000 baht note plus change for the "over" amount expecting 400 baht change. The cashier was adamant I had paid the full amount and no change was necessary. After a long "heated" conversation I noticed a CCTV camera above the till and insisted it was viewed. The supervisor did this and later returned with the 400 baht and apologies.

Likely outcome:

Old Lady gets done by 7/11 for deformation and staffer gets recruited by RTP.

Who was deformed? Didn't see any crippling assault.

In the Philippines staff nearly always say "I received one thousand" or whatever it is.

Same here. The old lady didn't hear or the staff tricked her.

Never, ever heard it here in 10 years.

My local 7-11 girls say it every time. I'm in Siam Square area. Better training? Even kept my lost umbrella last week for me. Got it back the next day.

Hey !!!! I had the same experience in Phuket ! Exactly the same in the 7/11.

I was, i dont know why, really checking out how they handled and got less money back.

I disagreed with that, then there was the till failure, another helper to help with till.

I persisted and after some hassle, there comes my money, already in the bra from the woman, out of the bra !!

OK had my money and left, but be aware with tills and shopping. And it seems now maybe a common 7/11 scam ?!!

Or it maybe the same 7/11 in Phuket, i cant tell

Maybe you were expecting them to say: "My dear chap, thanks awfully for the receipt of a one thousand baht denomination note". In Thailand they tend to say something along the lines of "rap maa neung phan baht (na kha)". It's called Thai language.

Dealers in casinos will always show their hands to the "eye in the sky" and clap their hands together to show they are leaving the table without taking any chips.

It might be a good idea when presenting a note for payment to pause for a moment before handing it to the clerk and make sure it is visible to the camera.  It will keep everyone honest.

It appears to me that both women behind the counter are in the scam together after the second one sees the first one hide the thousand baht note under something under the counter .

None of the other woman saw the thief do anything.

I always say 1,000 baht when I give it to someone, to make sure someone else hears.

I always say out loud the value of the note if it is 500 or 1000. Also look at the cashier who nearly always nods the head. Never had a plomlem......Yet......

This is an old beer bar scam. You give a 1000 for 300 worth of drinks, get change of 500 - 200! Lesson for young players - always have a witness, pay in the lowest possible denomination, or announce loudly the bill you're giving. Final check is to know the serial number of your 1000 and ask manager to check. Again, a few initial words in Thai and a smile solves the problem  - they know you know.

A newer scam is staff not handing out discount stamps for goods (not alcohol) bought, usually 5% . Check if you are entitled to the stamps. i see this often around Siam Square, with lots of tourists buying stuff. The staff pocket the stamps

Wow.  Have a witness?

Hey, why don't you just turn on your phone, point it at them, and video tape every financial transaction in every place you go??  Better then yelling out some insecure announcement.

Like I have mentioned before.  The people that get scammed usually look like potential victims.

Older inattentive, fat, drunk, slurring words may put you at the top of the list.

Stamps?: OMG good for them they are a big annoyance for me I hope they can buy a bottle of water....

Maybe not.

I suggest you buy a megaphone to make sure.

Good luck...

My local 7/11 tried scamming me in a different way but I sussed them out,I got some snacks & 10 bottles of beer, the katoey serving me only charged me for the snaededcks & 4 beers, then another katoey appeared as to be in the scam,I had read reports of this type of scam before, they don't charge for some items so when you leave the store they nab you for theft, some farang may not of totted up the total & oblivious of it,or they know it's a shortfall & think they're saving money, they get a policeman & you have a choice, pay them money or get arrested, well nobody wants to go to jail or be deported so pay up,the 1i read about  a week prior, the farang had to cough up B60,000 to the scammed, so al ways tot up your items or count items on receipt,DO NOT think your getting a freebie in thailand, every discr

Had exactly the same thing happen to me at the 7/11 at Huai Sak, just after Christmas. Bitch thought she was smarter than an old farang, but I watched exactly what she did and called her out on it! She put the 1000 baht bill under the till before she opened the lid on the money box. When I told her that I gave her 1000 baht she said no and kept arguing that it had only been 100. I told her exactly what she had done and that I would come behind the counter and show her the note that she had put under the till. Aha! Then a big mistake. She went all apologetic and gave me my correct change and now I watch her every time I go into the store.

Are 7/11 franchised???

If so possibly they are trained in store and although they will all have the same training manual and rules these may be lax under some franchise holders.

The cashier is right under the cctv camera, how could she believe that she wouldn’t be caught?

Unless she believed that cameras wouldn’t be working or is just incredibly stupid.

Probably both.

Though I do wonder how the friend get hold of the footage.

Thais have not yet caught up mentally with CCTV. They know it's there but have no concept of what it is there for. There was a wonderful report several months ago of a dress shop owner who had it installed, and was then caught on it stealing from a customers bag as the customer was in a cubicle trying on a dress :cheesy:

Believe it or not but it happens more often than one might think.

7-11 across from my work is not only rude beyond believe but tries this kind of short changing in regular basis.

i have complained to headoffice, my staff have complained , in total at least 10 calls and call centre was well aware of this store as they instantly knew the store number and yet nothing has changed. 8 years of all same rudeness and short changing

My wise Thai wife, NEVER, NEVER throws away a receipt. Has backed down even TOT who claimed she didn't pay...oops, I guess we were wrong, what with you having your receipt, same with many big providers. If you pay again, who steals the 2nd payment?

I've never had such issues at 711s or Family Marts but I have at restaurants. So at restaurants when I pay with 1000 baht I show the bill and say the amount. Seems a bit much but it always works and I haven't had any waiters give me attitude about it either.

Sent from my Lenovo A7020a48 using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

When paying with a 10000 in a bar I always ask if they can change this as I hand over, so they know that I know, and I know that they know....
