I don't like that it is not possible for foreigners to rent a car (self driving) in Vietnam.

I’ve been commuting from Thailand to Vietnam 3-4 days per week for the past 18 months. So I see both sides quite regularly. But with regard to visas that foreigners can get for long stay, this is one area where Vietnam excels compared to Thailand. Visas are super easy. None of the stupid rules of financials and hours and hours spent standing in lines to deal with loads of unnecessary paper work and bribery and changing rules and all the rest that we all love in Thailand. You just go online, choose the duration and class (business or tourist) visa you want, pay for it with credit card or even PayPal, and then receive it from agent who meets you at the arrivals hall at the airport, then in and out multiple entry visa good for a year. You can get a 1 year multiple entry business visa for about $500. You can work with it, live with it, open bank accounts, everything. There aren’t the stupid rules prohibiting foreigners from working. If you go to a french restaurant, it’s quite refreshing that all the staff are French, same for Argentinian, English, Moroccan, etc. It’s a million times more foreigner friendly and business friendly than Thailand. The rest are just lifestyle issues which you’ll need to see and compare for yourself.

Personally I find the cost of living similar, give or take a few things. There is much better nightlife in Vietnam. I find Vietnam food to be better and cheaper than Thai food, and foreign foods about the same quality and cost, depends where you go. I do find Vietnam much safer, much less crime, and driving is a million times easier and more refreshing without so many kamikaze motorbike drivers as in thailand. Amazingly, there are more motorbikes in Vietnam as compared to cars and almost no accidents at all.
What type of nightlife is better?

i also like vietnam , similar to the above.i love Nha trang beach--except too many russians there.

viet women dont compare to thai women...a little more educated though...

i will be in Da nang next month, for the first time..

i find the toot-toot-toot style of driving, very strange....

I bet most readers did not understand the toot-toot-toot. I was shocked that from sunrise and throughout the night everybody is honking continuously. Very strange and very annoying.

No wonder. The Viets have a completely lopsided way of driving. Such as making turns from three lanes out. Duelling with scooters at roundabouts and in street lanes. Cutting across solid lines into opposing traffic to bypass slower cars. Plowing into swarms of motos to make a turn. Riding the horn instead of the brakes. And my favourite, blasting down moto-only paths to beat traffic. Except for the latter, all of these methods are normal.

Vietnam is well worth a visit. Danang, Dalat and Hanoi all interesting places. Did not like HCMC ( Saigon ).
Food is a bit blander than Thailand, breakfasts have the French influence. Hired a scooter, no problem wherever I went.
The coffee in Vietnam is among the best around. I thought for a Communist country the police and army presence was far less visible than Thailand.
They may not be visible but they rule with an iron fist and the human rights record is abysmal

Agree,

What area of Vietnam have you chosen?

Interested actually, as to where you settled on. I tend to go North but that is based o friends over there.

The Mekong Delta region:Probably the friendliest and most honest people in the country.

from the moment you enter vietnam the people will try to rip you off. its an annoying place to visit.

So clear ! this is the only thing to know and people keep telling you that vietnam is nice.

The only people whom I know who found Vietnam nice went to 5 stars and didn't do anything outside of what could be organized by their 5 stars hotel.

Anything else is ridiculous and posted my liars.

Hardly ever stayed in a place over $15 per night (or $250 per month). Do everything outside (eating, drinking, laundry, haircut, massage, moto, walking, sightseeing, ticketing, shopping, whatever), self-organized. Truly enjoyed nearly every moment of my time in VN. Yes, there were occasional rip-off attemps (mostly taxis), so what? The most annoying thing were many places to stay in Hanoi trying to hard-sell some tours. If you don't buy any, they become unfriendly. Feel free to call me liar if you please ????

Was in Hoi an a few months ago for the first time and loved it . The people , food, taxis , service , cleanliness etc were all top notch. Am looking to go back in February to same area and Da nang for few days also. Reminded me of here around 10 years ago . The Chinese are everywhere there also spending like crazy in casinos and buying property.

I must not travel in the same circles as you, but I have lived in Vietnam on and off since 2000 and am a property owner and only saw one casino in the New World Hotel...........I spend a lot of time in Saigon, Nha Trang and live in the Mekong Delta - the Chinese visitors are not well accepted, Vietnam is technically at war with China, and the people hate them..............you must be talking about Cambodia.

I know Americans can get a one year Multiple entry, but you still have to depart every 90 days, I have one don;t know if extensions are available, cause I never get to say longer than a month or two - I work contract from time to time.

A very silly statement

Obviously, you have not been and to then brandish TV members who have, as liars, just because their experiences differ is plain dumb!.

We all have different experiences of where we go, what we see and what we do. They all differ based on our personalities and actions. That does not make any of us liars. You seem to have it in for anybody who has a good experience in Vietnam.

Well, you will be outnumbered here, as most people travelling there have had good experiences and about how Vietnam is changing and becoming so much more tourist friendly.

I'm in Thailand because I have a Thai child, and everything here is free for him.
10 years back Vietnam wasn't as developed or accessible as it is now.
10 years back I could get a 1 year VISA for Thailand with no financials.
Thailand has changed for the worse.
Vietnam has changed for the better.

For someone starting fresh, it's way better than Thailand now.

Funny that. When you ask people who recommended another country why they don't go there to live themselves there is ALWAYS an excuse.

Wife, GF, property, kids.. You name it. But the real truth is even though they have grown tired of thailand they have no intention to ever leave

been to vn many times. attempted ripoff by mototaxi 1 time. have used grab many times. they have been above board. likely in tourist trap areas you will find a higher % of locals trying to rip you off. there is lot of petty theft at least in the past. i usually rent a motobike and bypass taxi scams. the motobike rental place in da nang takes me to the airport and refuses money.

have stayed at budget guest houses and higher end places.     as in any large city would exercise caution in hcm and hanoi.  a friend that previously only did the 5 star thing was very pleasantly surprised to see the other side of vn.

I had an excellent time there. Stayed in modest but small hotels with charming staff.
