Rayong: Cyclist blinded as he gets his eye poked out by protruding bamboo rod

A bicyclist out for an evening run on his exercise bike was blinded in his left eye when he struck a bamboo pole protruding from the back of a pick-up truck. 

 

Jatuporn Aksornsri, 41, was given first aid at the scene by the Bua Luang bend at ban Phe, Rayong by rescue services.

He was taken to Rayong Hospital where doctors were unable to save his eye - it had become completely detached from its socket. 

 

Pick-up owner Khamsing Nariwong, 34, said he was delivering the bamboo and had only one more piece to offload. 

 

He called the emergency services when he saw the cyclist in agony and covered in blood. He couldn't believe it happened - the area was well lit.

 

Police noted that a trash can had been placed as protection behind the pick-up but they are investigating how much the bamboo pole was sticking out before deciding on charges.

See this all the time,overloaded,and dangerous loads,terrible for the guy,driver should face charges.

Jeeeeesus.  No need to go on about the non'flagged bamboo, we all know what should have been done.

...but what are the odds, of losing (horribly) your eye on a bicycle jaunt.  

This kind of accident absolutely infuriates me as it was so easily prevented, but so typical of the Thai attitude towards safety. This poor bike rider loses an eye because the driver couldn't be bothered to tie a bit of rag to the end of the pole.

Pretty high I imagine when you see how many pipes and other unflagged objects hanging from the rear of pickups.

The odds are very high, I always think that people riding bicycles on main roads here have a death wish.

prudent to always wear eye protection on any 2 wheeled vehicle.

 

a friend during high school lost his eye is a freak accident, slipped on ice and a car antenna impaled his orbit

It should be a light really as its dark,but that would be

As said, the law states that the protrusion must have a 'flag' in daylight and a light at night.  This had neither.

Quite high, I was on my bicycle early one evening recently just going to the local store.

A pick-up edged out from a left hand Soi just in front of me and stopped, seeing me on a bike he pulled out in front to go in the same direction... as he turned I luckily saw a "rebar" flapping as it hung a good 2 meters over the back tailgate, exactly at head height!!!

Anyone approaching directly from behind would not have seen it and been skewered for sure!

As I read it the van was stationary while unloading the bamboo and the driver had placed a trash can behind the van as a warning.

 

Not perfect but at least the driver made an effort, I think the cyclist should have been more attention.

If the bloke on the bike hadn't hit the bamboo, the tailgate of that truck was the next stop!! What the hell was he doing? Obviously not watching where he was going!!

My sentiments exactly. Too often I see extra long loads protruding from the rear of trucks with NO RED FLAG (or shirt, shorts, towel etc.)
