Well the police check mine out (IDP) and certainly allow it for more than 3 months ... up to its validation date, which is a year. This is just the police on the street or at hwy checkpoints who stop you and look at it mind you.

So it could be totally WRONG  information,  but it DOES stop them from giving a ticket or demanding a backhander so there you go.

Yes, police allow it, they really have to because it is not required by law. Doesn't mean they will though.

That's why I said an IDP will prevent issues.

  • Many correct answers in this thread so far, unfortunately the one I'm replying to is not correct: IDP is not legally required (still recommended, if only due to police checks) and maximum time allowed

How many times a year does this topic get restarted !! Use the search function it works a treat..

  • Be sure to also pack your home country license as well, as thats the license you are actually driving on. If they ask how long you have been in Thailand be sure to say an amount under 90 days otherwis

You mean translate? The original Thai law was quoted by me in the other topic, ask any native Thai speaker to explain it's meaning to you, it says a foreigner who stays in the kingdom temporary, and if you look at your permit of stay you will see that it is temporary, really not so difficult

So now you're admitting that if staying here long term your IDP is not valid more than 3 months?

If you are staying in Thailand permanently (Thai citizenship or permanent residency) an IDP from another country isn't valid at all.

But most people concerned about using an IDP from their home country are most likely in Thailand on a temporary permit of stay (tourist or non-immigrant) and these people can use their IDP for its complete validity.

I didn't say anything different before ????

The 3 months limit is just something somebody once made up and everybody copies it, but it doesn't exist.

There are 10 Types of Non Immigrant visa.

And with all of them you will get a temporary permit of stay, and that what it's about if you read the Thai law regarding the use of an IDP

90 Days and you need a Thai Licence if you live here. Quite Simple.

Disagree. It doesn't refer to permit of stay, it refers to period of stay. And even if it were to refer to permit of stay, you're clearly not adhering to the intention of the law, therefor on a dangerous path.
