The playbook the guilty use to cover up famine, as in Gaza
For Hassan, surviving famine in Gaza is about the calculations he faces daily – starting with how to precisely split a single piece of bread so that each quarter is a meal. He walks three miles every day to look for vegetables, and spends hours getting firewood to cook what little food he can find. Last week he spent four days looking in vain for flour, rice or pasta – instead he saw people fainting on the streets from lack of food. After finding three cans of beans, he worried for hours about the best way to portion them up between a family of five, even consulting ChatGPT for strategies to ration out the calories. ‘In Gaza, starvation hits us mentally and physically. $2,000 won’t even buy two weeks’ bread’ (Hassan has lost more than 38kg (six stone) since March, when Israel began a full blockade of Gaza and food rapidly became scarce.) -

Accident Body of Missing Southern Man Found After Drowning Off Nai Thon Beach
Picture courtesy of Khoasod. The body of a 23-year-old man from southern Thailand who went missing while swimming off Nai Thon Beach has been recovered after a two-day search, authorities confirmed the morning of 27 July. The victim, identified as Mr Nianus Saleh, originally from Padang Besar in Pattani province, had been working in Phuket. He was reported missing on the evening of 25 July after entering the sea with five friends at Nai Thon Beach. According to witnesses, he was swimming in deep water when powerful waves swept him away in front of his companions around 18:50. A major search and rescue operation was launched immediately, led by Thalang District Chief Siwatch Rawangkul, along with Dr Somkit Chokkhong, an advisor to the Phuket Governor, and Pol Col Salan Santisasanakul, Superintendent of Sakoo Police Station. The operation involved local authorities, rescue teams and concerned residents. A temporary search coordination centre was established and relatives of the victim travelled from Pattani to assist and await news. The Kusoldharm Foundation deployed 25 divers and seven inflatable boats to comb the surrounding waters and rocky coastline. The Cherngtalay Subdistrict Administrative Organisation also surveyed coastal areas within their jurisdiction. Additionally, search teams deployed drones to scan the rocky shoreline and open sea in the vicinity of the disappearance. At 06:55 on 27 July, search and rescue personnel from the Kusoldharm Foundation located Mr Nianus’s body near rocks off Nai Thon Beach. Grief-stricken family members confirmed his identity at the scene. The body was retrieved and transferred to Thalang Hospital, where forensic staff and police conducted an autopsy. UK 220 MPs Demand Keir Starmer Recognise Palestinian Statehood
LONDON (Reuters) -British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will recall his cabinet from their summer break to discuss the situation in Gaza, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, amid growing pressure on the Labour government to recognise a Palestinian state. The paper said the move to recall his cabinet of ministers next week was set out on Sunday by Downing Street. The UK parliament and cabinet are currently in a summer recess until September 1. The recall comes after Starmer said on Friday the British government would recognise a Palestinian state only as part of a negotiated peace deal, disappointing many in his Labour Party who want him to follow France in taking swifter action.
