CCTV footage from Chiang Mai showed a Thai bag snatcher on a motorcycle make off with the shoulder bag of a Russian woman.

Olga Zherdeva, 43, gives chase on foot while her boyfriend catches up and tries to hunt down the snatcher on his own bike.

Another angle shows the thief double back still with Olga and her boyfriend in hot pursuit.

Unfortunately the bag snatcher got away but two days later Chiang Mai police had him in custody after following his trail to a house in Pa Daet sub-dictrict.

He was named as career criminal Ratisak, 49, from the Muang Chiang Mai area.

A bag and a stolen iPhone 6S were recovered along with a Honda Click and Ratisak's clothes used in committing the crime on Thursday night outside the Vieng Mantra Hotel.

He had served two years for bag snatching in 2009. After being let out in 2011 he tried work in construction and odd jobs but told reporters that it just didn't pay to be honest.

So he went back to his old ways of doing snatches.

Deputy chief of provincial police in Chiang Mai Pol Col Piyaphan Patrapongsin called it a serious dent for the image of tourism in the northern capital.

He assured tourists of full police protection at the upcoming Li Peng (Loy Krathong) festival in the city.
