Indecent materials on a laptop

Who cares, who is going to check your laptop. My phone is as full as my laptops and my tablets, and I don't give a fuxx !

Interesting point and I can confirm that immigration/customs/departures have never checked my device(s).

But there's also the cascade effect.  You get pulled for something minor, or indeed major, and the closer inspection of every aspect of your belongings commences.  This could also lead to the confiscation of your devices for forensic examination.  Don't give them the excuse.

Up to you.

I imagine I would worry a bit if I brought back box set of a few seasons of Game of Thrones to Thailand
They're ok as long as the "wobbly bits" are blurry...also the cigarettes, bottles of booze and guns or knifes but only when pointed at someone.

If you really want porn etc, then set up an account on dropbox or Icloud and keep on the web!!  That way unless someone knows your username and password they can never find you so easily!!

If you are worried about IP address set up the account at a Internet shop. Be warned though, "illegal porn" etc can always be traced to the actual computer accessing the sites!!

You actually wipe and reinstall windows every-time you cross a border ?

Did I st-st-st-stutter? Yes. Takes about 30 minutes and I have 100% worry free border crossing. You'd do the same if YOU'D been standing in my shoes.

If you want porn its available online so what is the point of keeping any files on your computer ?

Just delete your browser history before you travel and rinse and repeat....

Unless you have some particularly, er, "specialist" tastes (or even if you do) there's enough online material (access via a VPN) that you can avoid carrying anything with you.

If you really must take your own stash, a (readily concealed or hidden in plain sight) micro-SD encrypted with VeraCrypt (son of TrueCrypt) using the "plausible deniabilty" functionality would work for most casual inspections (I would definitely not risk the US).

I long ago gave up carrying anything that could be construed as iffy by some of the countries I visit, not that I graduated much past Mary Millington and Auntie Jayne (yes, I'm that old). A decently fast internet connection gives me VPN access to my NAS at home where important data (banking and work of course) resides.

What about a link to a porn site (not pedo or violent etc.), in your favorites list, is that 'iffy?'

and what would that be good for?

If you don't want officials to look at your private internet history , what else? Okay you can show them if you wish.

There are some urban myths floating around at the moment to do with this subject. Saw some posts in a Pattaya facebook group saying Thais are turning up to Australia with a resident visa and having there phone searched and then having their visa cancelled and refused entry because of images on phones.

Absolute rubbish but the story is being shared around. 100s are believing it.

We used to get MNET in the south, a network of stations from South Africa.  I miss it.

No Thai censorship at all, they even occasionally played that certain Jodi Foster movie that is banned. It's always a culture shock to come up to Bkk and see the blurring on guns, ciggies etc.

Transiting through Amsterdam airport in the 1970s I was really surprised to see 8mm porn movies sold in the airport shops along with the magazines, candy etc (this was before VCR cassettes). I figured most countries would hassle if customs found one in your bags.

For those who doubt there are customs officials who would do this the US definitely does, but most cases I've heard involves US guys returning from a short trip to Thailand, and if they get the notion they'll go through phones, memory sticks, whatever.

There's a little product called a porn detection stick which scans a hard drive in minutes and identifies all videos and images based on skin pigment analysis. This can scan all file types and creates a database and file name for the scan. It's plug and play and anyone can use it. Its very comprehensive. Imagine if the RTP had that.
