Can't find a socket for an extension cord.

Featured Replies

I have two extension cords to use with the electric mower, one plugs into the other using a male and female socket. One of the cords broke near the female socket, so I cut that piece out and now have to put another socket on the cord as the one I cut off is sealed. However checking all the major hardware stores it doesn't seem such a thing is available, in fact there is a noticeable lack of electrical plugs of any kind. So where can I find something to replace the one I cut off (shown), or do I have to buy another extension cord?

Round pins with earth are becoming the new Thai standard, in favour of the older style parallel flat pins, so I'm surprised you can't find replacement connectors.

Assuming your extension lead is 3-core (i.e includes an earth line - not clear from the photo), and that your supply is similarly earthed, then you should replace 3-pin with 3-pin.

But if you supply is not earthed, then you can just as easily replace your damaged socket with the more commonly available 2 flat pin socket, and replace the corresponding plug with a matching plug.  2-pin plugs and sockets are available in any local builders merchant, farm shop or supermarket, for around 20-25 bt each.

If you're using it outside in damp conditions - which mowing often creates, it's best to cover the connection.. a simple 600ml plastic water bottle with the bottom cut off works well... make a tight but sliding fit hole in the lid and thread the lead through this and the bottle before fitting the plug or socket.

It's only a 2 core lead and the sockets are only for two pin round plugs.

According to the photo, the connectors/sockets are not.

This probably works, this one was from HomePro

I was in HomePro this morning, never saw any plugs like that. I'll try a local builders shop. I see a screw on top of the male plug, does the female have the same for opening the case?

Just replace both the socket and a matching plug on the other lead then.. easy.

Schuko trailing outlet. HomePro, Global House, MegaHome.

Take the old one with you.

If you really don't like the side ground straps not being connected then remove them when you wire it up.

Cut the cable, buy one female and one male plug and connect the cable/lead to the sockets. (cheap charley solution)

Hardware house is very good for this type of thing.

That's my point, the sockets just aren't easy to find. I imagine the only thing they are used for are extension leads.

I did take it with me, none of the staff knew what it was, but they did say, no hab.

I'm in Pattaya, don't think there is one.

You completely fail to understand me.. perhaps my bad..(?)

Replace both the damaged socket AND the plug on the other lead with whatever style you CAN get....  Or call a Thai electrician to do it for you!!

I understand you fine, but my point is that sockets that attach to an extension cord aren't easy to find. A 2 pin plug that you attach to a kitchen appliance yes, but not the socket. If you can find one listed anywhere that's similar to what I showed please post a pic. Needs to be heavy duty like this.

Exactly that.

There are plugs and sockets available for 3-wire like mostly used in Thailand.

If I find a picture I post it.

Finding mountable Schuko is a pain ....

There is a big one just past the Laem Chabang Junction, it would mean coming off the Motorway (7) at the FIRST junction after going over the big flyover (around KM101 or so), it is signed posted for Sriracha and Map Lang, once through the toll keep immediately LEFT heading towards Sriracha, go past the big PTT petrol station and the Thai Watsadu store, then, at the lights, u turn under the flyover and head back towards Pattaya, it is just after Homepro, you can't miss it.

If it's really about heavy duty, print example pictures and ask at specialized electrician shops.

There are simpler parts available (also round, 3 pin, with rubber casing) but maybe not heavy duty to your request.

Or you try Makita power tool store in Pattaya North Road for power tool trailing socket.

I bought the entire cable with both molded ends last week in Home Pro 25m 875bt orange in CM when mine shorted out and caught fire on the end that plugs into the mower they also had some separate end parts for a repair but as my consumer unit did not trip (scary) I bought the whole thing????

@giddyup if you don't score drop me a PM I can pick a couple up for you from MegaHome.

OK thanks. I'm going back to Thai Watsadu tomorrow as I believe I saw one there, it had a removable cap over it so didn't think it was the same, but now I'm inclined to think it's the same thing, just a different style.

Yeah, ours all have (had) the flippy cover. They are (fairly) weather proof if you use the matching plug too.

There is one just south of The Ambassador Hotel in Na-Jomtien....they have lots of
"good stuff"

" Round pins with earth are becoming the new Thai standard "

Not so. They are common here but only because of tools and appliances imported from Europe.

Construction codes for Thailand now specify North American style 3-pin connectors (two flat w/ round earth).

Genuine HaCO outdoor IP 67 or IP 44 made in Australia are readily available at any full line HaCO dealer in any province in Thailand. I checked these plugs for a Makita electric lawn mower cable I made with 3 by 2.5mm grounded VCT cable in Buriram. I noticed the 100 liter Stiebel Eltron Hot water heater tank which seems a step up from the "German sounding, but actually Chinese" brand I viewed at Global. Certainly will be available in Northern Thailand.
