So with the launch of dual SIM iPhone X and Pixel 3, eSIMs are becoming a reality.  You can go to AIS or DTAC and convert your plastic sim to an eSIM if you have the latest iPhone.   Also you can now get what is Asia's cheapest travel sim - the AIS SIM2Fly - as an eSIM.  

 

This pretty much means no need to buy a local SIM when you travel to another country for a visit.  While traveling, you keep your home SIM #1 active for voice and SMS, and use the roaming SIM #2 for all data needs.
