Crime Man Held for Fatal Machete Attack on Younger Drinking Companion

A 48-year-old man has been remanded in custody following the brutal killing of a 27-year-old man during a late-night drinking session in a rice field hut in Non Suwan district, Buriram province. The victim’s father has rejected the claim that the attack was in self-defence and is urging the court to deny bail. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 30, when Mr. Boonthom, 48, allegedly used a large machete-style weapon to strike Mr. Thawatchai 27, multiple times on the head and face, resulting in his death. The attack reportedly took place in the middle of a rice field near Ban Khok Krabueang in Non Suwan district, where the two men had been drinking with others at a hut belonging to a local resident, Mr. Chat, 34. According to Mr. Boonthom, the assault stemmed from Mr. Thawatchai’s allegedly disrespectful and provocative behaviour, which included boastful and threatening remarks. He claimed the younger man, whom he referred to as being of a “son’s generation”, provoked him during the drinking session. However, police investigators at Non Suwan Police Station, led by Pol. Lt. Suton Krajangchit, found that no witnesses present during the gathering had seen the actual altercation, as many had already left before the violence erupted. The suspect was later arrested and formally charged before being transferred to Nang Rong Provincial Court for remand. Emotions ran high at the police station when Mr. Mee 73, the victim’s father, accompanied by family members and neighbours, submitted a formal request opposing bail. A close friend of the family later shouted angrily at the suspect outside the holding cell, expressing outrage on behalf of the deceased and his family. Mr. Mee told reporters he did not believe his son would have provoked or threatened the suspect as alleged, and he was convinced the attack was premeditated, not an act of self-defence. “My son’s body had multiple wounds to the head and he was found face down in the water in a paddy field,” he said. “That was no accident. It was deliberate.” Despite being approached by the suspect’s family, Mr. Mee said he could not accept any apology from the killer himself but would not object if the suspect’s parents wished to attend the funeral. “They were not responsible for their son’s actions,” he acknowledged. Mr. Boonthom’s mother, Mrs. Thanom 73, who visited her son in custody, tearfully expressed sorrow to the victim’s family. “I never thought my son would go so far as to kill someone. I don’t even know why it had to end like this. But if he did wrong, he must face justice. I will go and pay my respects at the funeral and help the family however I can,” she said. Speaking briefly to reporters before his transfer to court, Mr. Boonthom reaffirmed his earlier statement, claiming that the killing had not been premeditated. “He challenged me, disrespected me. I lost control. I never wanted it to end like this. I’m sorry and I accept whatever punishment I deserve,” he said, adding that he had asked his mother to apologise on his behalf and support the victim’s family during the funeral. Picture courtesy of Amarin. Thailand has been officially named host of three prestigious international sumo tournaments this September, marking a historic moment for the nation’s sporting calendar. At a press conference held at the TK. Palace Hotel & Convention, Mr. Jakrapong Chaorungmethee, President of the Sumo Association of Thailand, announced that the Kingdom had been granted the honour by the International Sumo Federation (IFS) to stage three major competitions. These are the 26th Sumo World Championship 2025, the 19th Junior Sumo World Championships 2025 and the 15th Asian Sumo Championships 2025. All events will take place from 13–14 Septemberat Rangsit University, with more than 300 sumo wrestlers from over 40 countries expected to compete. “This is a great opportunity for Thailand, especially following the global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mr. Jakrapong. “Sumo athletes around the world are eager to come to Thailand and we are confident that our association will deliver a world-class event. This also aligns perfectly with the IFS’s mission to promote the sport of sumo across Asia.” Supporting the announcement, Mr. Nop Imjaroon, Vice President and Head Coach of Thailand’s national sumo team, revealed that both male and female Thai athletes have been in full training for the past month in Ban Mi District, Lopburi Province. “After this intensive training phase, the athletes will be allowed to return home briefly to focus on studies, family and work,” Mr. Nop explained. “They’ll regroup in early August for final preparations ahead of the tournaments.” Thailand’s national team consists of 24 athletes, and despite concerns over size disadvantage compared to international competitors, Mr. Nop expressed strong optimism: “Our team is extremely dedicated and hardworking. In the lighter weight divisions, we genuinely believe we can win medals, possibly even gold.” The triple championship event is set to be one of the largest and most diverse gatherings in international sumo history. I don't pay her a "salary". Normally pay when she asks but the amount has been creeping up, almost like I am being tested. I did make it quite clear that I had expenses that I had to meet this month. Along side the standard fixed costs they were the Thai accountants annual fee, work on the house I have been trying to get done for over a year. Ask anybody from the UK what it is like to get plastering done. Finally found one who can do it and not charge a small fortune. I laid it on the like then the first thing that she wanted was 13,000 baht for her credit card. Had last month she not asked for an additional £528 sending her 13000 baht wouldn't have been a problem. I don't need to make an excuse. Normally the accountant is doing the accounts in March but I think he forgot this year and only did them last month. Had he been on time his fee would have been paid 4 months ago.
