I'm looking to buy a middle range safe - something that I could screw down or not.Is there a specialist shop with a wide range and competitive prices in Chiang Mai? Would appreciate suggestions - preferably with rough directions to the shop or a tel no. Thanks a lot.

(Tried Central and Home Pro so far - neither has safes.)

Chiang Moi Road has may be a dozen or more safe shops, go do a bit of window shopping. I bought mine there.

The best guy to advise on safes runs a key shop (มิกกุญแจ) on Chang Puak. His shop is only about 100 metres up from the moat on the right hand side. He is able to source and will arrange their delivery and fitting etc.

He is also safe to use and will not pass on copy keys and combi details to less savoury visitors.

It is far from unheard of for people to receive a visit and have valuables cleaned out within a short period of having safes delivered. The delivery/fitting engineers feed info to and receive a commission from the eventual thieves.

Carrefour stock a range of four - from about 1,200 to 6,000 baht, as best as I remember. They're the type that you see in hotel rooms - you key in your choice of code number (4 digits, I think). From what I could see, there are 4 holes through which you can screw or bolt the unit to a solid surface.

Look for a floor safe and concrete it in, the sound of the thieves jack hammering it out should wake the neighbours.

I was in home pro koh samui 10 days ago and they were selling home safes upwards of 7000 baht to 40,000 baht go back and ask them if any of there other stores have them good luck in your search

Index Living Mall on the Super Highway has a decent range in stock.

make sure to put some dehumidifying crystals or a 'farcent" brand dehumidifier pack in the safe if you are keeping cameras or paperwork in the safe and to replace them regularly.

This shop has moved to bigger premises.......sort of ....much further up the road, turn right...and near the stadium. When inquiring around where it was originally (opposite the school) another shopkeeper told me of the move. Thought I'd mention this since some of you seemed top rely on him for keys' issues etc. Having located him, first his english was non-existent and he wasn't therefore much help to me. But I hasten to add they were ever smilling, polite, charming etc...

I'm only now getting to actually buying the safe. Has anyone actually bought a model from those at Carrefour or Index or any of the safe shops, and would recommend (or caution) based on experience? I have in mind for example the long term comparative reliability of these electronic safes vs. the mechanical ones.
