Good evening everyone.

Is anyone able to explain what the requirements are for a work permit/visa to work for a language centre in Thailand?

1. The work you are contracted to do must no be on the list of jobs forbidden for foreigners.

2. Your prospective employer must certify to the department of employment that he was unable to find a Thai national to fill the position.

Thank you for the message Maestro.

Do I also need to get a police clearance from my home country for a language school job and a local Thai police clearance?

The police clearance is only needed to apply for a non-b visa at a embassy or consulate. Whether it needs to be from your home country or a Thai  one depends upon where your apply for the visa. Both are not required.

Thank you Ubonjoe

Apologises this is all very new to me. To work for a language school I would need to apply for a non-b visa from an Embassy or Consulate and depending on them I would need clearance but technically its not a requirement for a language school? Is that correct? Just trying to clarify before I start applying because I dont want to get messed around or spend money I dont have to.

Is the work permit being supplied before starting work? Or are they asking for you to wait 3 months while you work before they apply?

I haven`t started work yet. I`m just trying to understand the processes involved so I don`t get messed around. I was informed language schools and public schools have different rules. I don`t have an Education degree and I`m thinking to stay long term in Thailand. I`ve seen working in public schools has a shelf life usually, hence I`m personally more interested in working for a language centre. I wanted to know if I have to get a police check from my home country which would take time and money for a language school. I was told working at a language school it wasn`t a requirement but I wanted to check, something about differences between a teacher and an instructor.

I work for a language school teaching English and have a work permit through it, no bachelors degree, just an official TEFL certificate. I believe my 'official title' is language instructor. also note that I am on a non-o based on thai spouse, however. But I had no issues with Labour Dept. getting a work permit. I did not need to have a police check because I did not need the Non-b, but that is a requirement if needing the Non-b I believe.

Thank you Homemade514 for your reply. That clears a lot of my questions up for me. I thought needing a degree for anything work related in Thailand was a prerequisite. I guess if you have a Thai spouse it is a little easier. I wonder if that official title, "language instructor" is common practice. I guess it makes it easier for the language centres regarding your work.

Anything can end up being possible

Working with no qualifications whatsover with no permits to being asked to supply more than one qualification and being asked to leave the country for visa requirements and being asked to follow teacher licencing rules

The golden rule I think is go along with what the employer says and don't upset anyone.

I personally have stopped teaching here because of the anti sentiment bureaucracy.

South korea offer free accommodation, good salary and flights.

If I need to work I'd go there instead.

seems as though it is shifting that way, for sure. like many other things, it could vary from province to province as well.
