U.S. Democrats target who's who of Trump insiders but not Ivanka, others

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some of U.S. President Donald Trump's closest advisers, including his daughter Ivanka, were missing from a list of people that Democratic lawmakers sought documents from on Monday for a corruption investigation of the president.

 

The list covered a who's who of Trump family members and associates, but Ivanka Trump was omitted, despite former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen testifying last week that he briefed her numerous times about a Trump skyscraper project in Moscow.

 

Also absent from the list were former senior White House officials, including chief of staff John Kelly and economic adviser Gary Cohn. Both spent more than a year in Trump's inner circle and have featured prominently in books and other published accounts of conditions in the Trump White House.

 

The reasons for some prominent people being left off the House of Representatives investigators' list were not immediately clear.

 

House Democrats say they have been careful to avoid conflicts with the investigation by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign, as well as federal probes being led by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan.

 

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler told ABC on Sunday that Kelly could be included.

 

A committee aide said Monday's list was only a first phase of document requests and more letters would be going out soon.

 

Eighty-one people, agencies and organizations were named by the committee as recipients of document requests, including Trump's adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, as well as his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is Ivanka's husband and a White House adviser.

 

Representatives for the White House and Justice Department said the document requests were being reviewed.

 

At the White House, Trump was asked if he would cooperate with Nadler's probe. "I cooperate all the time with everybody," he said, adding, "You know the beautiful thing? No collusion. It's all a hoax ... It's a political hoax."

 

Nadler's committee hopes to determine whether Trump obstructed justice by possibly offering pardons or tampering with witnesses and by ousting perceived enemies, such as former FBI Director James Comey. Trump fired Comey in May 2017 while he was leading an investigation into Russian meddling in the election. The probe was taken over by Mueller.

 

Comey was not on Monday's list. Nor was Andrew McCabe, the former top FBI official who began an obstruction of justice and counterintelligence investigation involving Trump and his ties to Russia after Comey's firing. Nor was Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller as special counsel.

I suspect one or all of four possibilities:

 

The committee do not wish to offer Trump a chance to use his daughter’s appearance as a distraction from there investigation.

 

The committee don’t, yet, want to make a such a blatant move against Trump.

 

The committee, and or other, have a more dedicated investigation lined up for Ivanka.

 

The committee do not wish to tread on the toes of an already ongoing investigation into Ivanka.

 

 

Trump and Illiberals will be touting this as ‘Ivanka is not a subject of investigation’.

Oh I see a major tantrum brewing compleat with never before in history....no collusion..... but but Hillary....ya da ya da ya da lol an innocent man would open the books assist the investigation to get it over with but not Donald well you reap what you sow

I could well be that the authorities have a specific investigation ongoing and therefore the lawmakers were notified not to interfere in an ongoing investigation.

What you mean exactly what the Republicans did with Obama?

Mitch McConnell is famously quoted as saying the top priority for Republicans was to make Obama a one term president; Newt Gingrich openly admitted that it was GOP policy to block Obama's policies 'at every opportunity', forcing Obama to revert to executive powers to get anything done. Jesus, Republicans wouldn't even discuss Obama's supreme court nomination Merrick Garland, with McConnell again famously saying "One of my proudest moments was when I looked Barack Obama in the eye and I said, 'Mr. President, you will not fill the Supreme Court vacancy.'  

So when you wonder how Democrats 'would've reacted had Hilary won and the Republicans then spent all their time attacking her' - probably the same way they reacted over the 8 years of Obama being obstructed at every turn; with resigned disgust.

Michael Cohen, and the SDNY, have already detailed of number of crimes. Obviously, an innocent person(s) would not fear an investigation.

I'm sure you found it similarly "odd" when the republicans investigated Benghazi, eleven times? And sought documents from Hilary Clinton, which ultimately surfaced the email 'scandal'.

The alleged crimes, as referenced in Chairman Nadler's letter include:

 

obstruction of justice
corruption
abuses of power

 

 

Hopefully, you're not feeling "odd" anymore?

Her whole life has been town down and examined continuously for decades.  Maybe you forgot that Bill was the youngest and longest serving governor in us history before he became president?  She said-been there, done that-next...

It is  not  the  volume of  such  executive orders that is of  concern. It  is  the  validity  of the  purpose  and legitimacy of the purpose of such orders that is of concern.

Simply a case of Trump and the GOP getting a tase of the obstructionists Obama had to endure during his time in office. The new normal in the US it seems.

I think a President who removes funding from protecting the electoral process against foreign interference deserves investigation.

 

Especially when it is a proven fact that a foreign government meddled in the election in which he gained his office.

True, The GOP, and especially TRUMP were busy trying to prove Obama was born in Kenya and therefore ineligible to be POTUS. ????  

 

This fake allegation of Obama not being born an American was much more important To the GOP and Trump fans than the substantial body of evidence developing that Trump conspired with the Russians in a treasonous election victory.
