My wife was previously married and when the father in law made the suggestion that I should pay money to marry her I told him he had already been paid once before and she was now a free agent.

Plus you'd get a huge discount because she's secondhand?

I suggest that you look in the mirror and say Hello "fool"!

Your tootsie is trying to shake you down.  I think that she would be gone just as soon as the money changes hands!

It would take her about a year to earn that much by hustling her butt every day.  Save your money and just say "NO"!

Run... I didn't pay any sinsod to my 45 year-old wife who has two grown up children from a previous marriage to a Thai. She sometimes mentioned it over the years, but I just said I've probably paid it twice over through paying for her daughter's University fees, modernising her house and buy a car last year. My wife has never mentioned sinsod to me since.

As many of the other members mentioned, go to Thailand - see if you like it long-term then go and find that person who you can trust.

Good idea to invest in the daughter's academic career instead of your wife. I do the same.

My lady is absolutely proud that she can stand on her own feet (her words), and so am I. It's a reliable mutual partnership - between two multicultural people from two different continents.

What does that mean "secondhand"?

Is it a stigma not to be a virgin?

No.  Of course not.  Perhaps for show and then she gives it back to you in 10 minutes in another room.

The dowry is the wealth a woman brings to her husband.  Bridewealth is the money a man gives to the lady.

I'd check the employment.  Sounds like a scammer to me and doubt the is a manager for a major chain.

Not easy. Many Thai ladies are in fact self-employed.

I married my wife 4 years ago, I paid her parents 200k which included some gold. Her parents paid for the party with a stage and everything out of the money I gave them. My wife is 26 now no baby and I have had a vasectomy anyway. I think that was a great deal and we get along great and are very happy. By the way I am 63 next month and before you say it, no I am not rich.

You might not consider yourself a rich man, but she might consider you as a 'velly lich' man

Even if sin sod is thought obligatory, it does NOT apply to those who have been married and/or no longer a virgin, of any age.

if you proceed, consider this to be the thin end of a very wide wedge! This one is a shark - find yourself a dolphin!

In Thai culture I believe an older woman (say 30+, especially with children) is "damaged goods". Not worthy of a high sinsod.

For my girlfriend who was 37 years old when we "married" (not officially), her mother was ok with a 100.000 Baht sinsod and no gold or any ceremony. But my girlfriend is also an uneducated country girl. I also promised her to take care of her in the tune of 30.000 Baht a month. We live upcountry and have a daughter so now our total spending is a bit higher, at 45.000 Baht a month, but fine for me. Children are expensive after all.

I think you should consider finding some other girl, as they say there's plenty of fish in the sea.

OMG, she sound like a real whore and idiot. You should dump her really fast. Since it is no longer Thai culture to pay any sinsod.

My wife was 24 years when we got married with a 4 year university education and a great job, no kids and never been married before. And I didn't pay a single baht to her parents or anything.

And also if she has been married before, with kids she should be paying you both sinsod and a salary every month since she is damaged goods and no one wants her.

Most foreigners vastly under-estimate the grade of woman they can get here based on what they could get back home...

OP aim higher, younger and pay less...but after due diligence of course

As they say in the LOS, up to you. But if you actually give this second hand model any sin sod you are way beyond naive. Do yourself a favor and stay in the US. You won't last six months in the kingdom.

100% she's only interested in the money, not you. It's quite possible to find a Thai woman that genuinely loves u and won't ask for a single baht in dowry. Certainly, damaged goods such as this one should not be asking anywhere near that amount lol. Maybe 5,000 baht at the most.

My wife was 22 when I married her, she had a 3 year old son which would have diminished her value anyway, but like I said she didn't ask for anything. And so nothing was paid (or even shown for that matter, we had a very small wedding with less than 10 family members present).

So I think it's fair to conclude that any Thai woman who insists on a non-returnable dowry is a scammer. Ditch her.

1,000,000 divided by a short time with model quality, 26 year old girls from escorts websites, in Bangkok for 3,700 baht equals 270 sex acts with 270 different women.

assuming one new woman every three days that's 121 woman every year for for 2.21 years.

intersperse it with a few Sherman tanks and it could last twice as long!

She wants a salary as a wife? Really? Tell her it might be her culture for that to happen, and for a divorcee to receive a million dowry (both are not true), but in your culture that is very much a no-no and akin to buying someone, human slavery. Tell her that you aren't paying her anything other than usual support as a husband and watch her run for the hills. It's money she's after, not you.

She is taking you for a ride.

At 44 if she has not gone into menapause it is not far away. Sex will stop.

Believe me.

She is dreaming.

Please do not become another broken fool.

I have been in Thailand 9 years. Married once.

My wife died of cancer. So I am not bitter.

The one thing I have learn’t is that Thai women are the best actors in the world and if it was possible they would win every a academy award.

Listen to what you are being told here on the forum.

If I had my time again I would not come to Thailand.

Look at other countries too.

Good luck.

My current gf is 37, has two sons. She wants to get married, has not been married before.

She mentioned  sin sod, and I asked how much she would pay. Haven't heard any more about sin sod, but she still wants to get married..

Being a retired history educator, when the subject came up, I explained that in Wester culture (I use the term loosely here), it is the bride’s family which presents a dowry to the man. And that while dowry’s are out of use, for the most part, the remnants of this tradition still exits in the bride’s family paying the wedding costs. I expect what will develop will be a “show” sin sot for face and agreeing that I will be paying for the wedding costs (not registered at the Amphoe office). My Love is 46 with a grown Daughter (on her own) and a teen Daughter with us. It’s all about keeping a balance and keeping you earned retirement funding on a level track. Sometimes easier said than done.

Head to China for that sort of money you can get a 20 year old virgin girl who would be absolutely stunning and you would just need to pay the salary to her family every month...no need for dowry!!

You are being taken for a fool. Best plan is to come to Thailand and have a bit of fun for a few years. Get to know the place. Make an effort to learn the language, it will help you in the long run and keep your brain focused. Make sure you like Thailand before making any long term commitments.

Good post, but may I make a comment on your last sentence? When I was going out with my wife before we married, I was still living in the UK and making trips to Thailand to be with her, I really loved Thailand and also made some western friends. I was thinking seriously about buying the wifes house and moving to Thailand for good.

At that time, all I had to do was go to the border every ninety days, only just over 200Ks away, and looked at that as a day out with my girlfriend, now my wife.

I made a long term commitment on that, and the fact that I loved the life and people, eventually buying the house we shared.

Now today. look at all the changes and the way we are treated by the Thai government, and all the visa changes we have to put up with. I am still happy living here, and have a good marriage and a good life. But I still feel a lot of bitterness towards the Thai government and feel that I was conned.

If today I was thinking about retirement in Thailand, I would still come and live here, but there were things I had done then but would not do now. In short, the good still outweighs the bad here, where in the UK the bad far outweighs the good.

Really, another sin sod thread?

All these paid posts are getting rather tiresome.

I don't agree, there are hundreds of different Thaivisa posters reading through this forum every day.

If sin sod threads bore you, then no problem, just move on to the next one.

I come across threads of the same subject that keep coming up that I do not have an interest in, but there are plenty of posters who will.
