Daily News reported that a former employee of many Thai banks turned rogue to fund a lifestyle of drugs and sex.

They said that 36 year old Sakon Witchayangkoon paid $15 to a foreign hacker for the credit card details of each victim.

He then bought goods online, bought and sold drugs and spent his money on sex.

He was arrested at Silk Place Condominium on Pahonyothin Road near the Victory Monument.

In his possession were five computers, 36 SIM cards and ten grams of "ice" (methamphetamine).

Daily News reported that he had stolen from at least 100 people and losses were 8 million baht.

Many were in the medical profession or business people and one was a well known Thai soap star in the "Hormones" series.

The suspect was charged and presented to the press at the Crime Suppression Division yesterday.

I thought the national police lately had announced a policy change that they weren't going to be "presenting" criminal suspects to press conferences any more???

According to many posters on this forum -Thai banks are completely safe and they are willing to keep 800K  parked there for decades.....until a rogue bank employee decides that they want to have some fun.

exactly why I refused any sort of card linked to my Thai Bank account

he claims he used a foreign hacker, I am not so sure about that

I'm inclined to think bank employees know of bank account that lay dormant and this happens on a bigger scale than we will ever know

Sex, Money and Power are the close relatives of drug and alcohol abuse, which often lubricates the former.

Find a crime or an instance of corruption and the tendrills lead back to these triplets and the fuel that drives them.

There are dishonest bank employees in any country who steal from customers. No doubt for that.

What can lead to some doubts and questions,  is how the Thai Banks handle such a situation and how rapidly and efficiently will they refund the victim, especially if he is a farang ? ? ?

I can see you've already been deservedly thrashed thoroughly for your ill-considered remark but I reiterate that a Thai bank account works for extension of stay with or without a credit card attached to it.

Bank accounts and credit cards developed to serve a need even though they are often abused by both providers and patrons.

For me a Thai bank account is the most convenient way to get my extension of stay while cash under a mattress most certainly does not qualify unless used for a bribe.

And we all know that's just not possible here. ????

WC, I'm asking a serious question now, not making a barb.

Does an ATM card not also serve as a debit card? Does it work only at an ATM machine? Does it work only nationally in Thailand ?

If so I would like to get mine changed. I would prefer to use it only to get cash. How do I specifically request such a card?

In the USA I refused debit/ATM cards for my accounts. They always just seemed like crime-bait to me.

Thanks for the idea.

The point is that this did not happen in this case!

This case has nothing at all to do with Thai banks being safe or otherwise or rogue bank employees!

This report has nothing to do with Thai banks or their employees but, leaving that hugely important fact aside, why are you "inclined to think that"?

To answer your questions I do not reside in Thailand anymore I am back in Australia

and no it does not act as a debit card like the one I had before you can use it for

shopping or withdraw cash from the ATM it will not work overseas and can't be

used to pay bills on line, so I guess you still in Thailand I do not know the rules

in Thailand now you would have to talk to your bank in Thailand

I just can't understand how they got hold of my card number and also the security

number at the back of my card and went on a spending spree in city's where

I have not been for many years the good thing is I will get the money reimbursed

from the the bank sorry can't help you more but thanks for the inquiry

Yes, I do know hat an opinion is.  Do you understand what a question regarding an unsubstantiated assertion of yours is?  If you can't respond rationally to a question about a post that you put on a forum that is no reason for you to suggest that my comment was uninformed.
