Nova Scotia International School Program to Hold Summer Camp In Thailand

The Nova Scotia International School Program (NSISP) is bringing their summer camp to Thailand for the weeks of June 30 to July 13

Started 21 years ago, the NSISP is a joint venture between the provincial Department of Education and the seven English language school boards. With over 1,300 yearly full-time students, the NSISP is one of the largest international student programs in Canada.

Its main objective is introducing the world to the Nova Scotia students, who would otherwise have very little chance of meeting international students, given the fact that the province is 95% Caucasian and 98% of the population being native English speakers (very unlike Vancouver or Toronto, which are two of the most culturally diverse cities in the world).

The 1-8 week summer camp held in Truro Nova Scotia has traditionally been used as a soft landing for new international student arrivals, helping them adjust to their new environment and preparing them for the coming school year. The camp not only focuses on ESL but also provides students with new skills, such as Critical Thinking, Success Strategies, Career Planning, Cultural Differences, etc. and of course, meeting other international and Canadian students.

Popular with new arrivals staying in the province for the September full academic year, the distance required to travel to Truro Nova Scotia makes the summer camp program difficult to access for those students interested in attending for only a couple of weeks. Due to the demand from Asian students, parents and overseas agent, NSISP has decided to offer a two- week camp in Hua Hin Thailand.

Thailand was chosen as the preferred location over other Asian countries due to its central location in Asia with easy accessibility, many daily flights at reasonable prices, great airport transfer options, good weather, great food, safe, and with hotel options, all at a reasonable cost.

Based on students and parents’ feedback, the program is offering STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Arts, and Math) in the morning with specialty courses in the afternoon, with an emphasis on making learning fun and showing students on how to take a leadership role in one’s own education and career pathway.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines (Science, Technology, English and Math) in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. Art was added to the mix, as it has proven to help students broaden their horizons, think out of the box and improve their performance in other subjects as well as other benefits.

The program is delivered in a way to show students how STEAM subjects, now considered the current focus of most western educational institutions, can be fun and interesting with a real practical application to a rewarding future career.

Students already in Thailand are asked to arrive at the Seapine Hotel in Hua Hin in the afternoon of Sunday June 30th. Classes will start on Monday July 1st and continue on until Friday, July 12th, at which point students will be free to return home or stay one more night before departing on Saturday, July 13th.

The Seapine Hotel was chosen for its spectacular seaside location and previous history with the GoStudyCanada January 2017 camp with Yothinburana School, Satree Phuket School, Narinukun School and Phichairattanakarn School.
