I had a few hours spare today so I thought I would upgrade my OS to Windows 10 from Win 7.

No problem, or rather one minor one.  It took one hour 20 minutes and warned me that my Nvidia graphics card did n't have the right  driver so it loaded the Windows basic one for me.

When it started up the screen resolution wasn't what I wanted, because of the basic driver I presume, so I found that Nvidia recommended a certain driver, v. 309.08.   I downloaded it and let them install it and it works fine.

Now I have to get used to it but so far I am very happy.  I'll give it a couple of weeks then erase the windows.old directory.

Congratulations, even when you're a few years late! But better now than never! Here's a little help. Don't forget to Create a System Restore Point and when all is working well, download Macrium and back it up on an external drive. Will save you many headaches!

Thanks for the pdf.

I'm late because I let you sort out the problems for me!  One day later it's working fine.

I'll follow both of your advice re backup.

Thanks again.

Welcome to W10. To complete your experience, standby to upgrade to the latest release of version 1903 sometime this month. Unless you are on Windows insider and have already done it.

Heads up for this upgrade, in my experience anyway, I found it took a looong time to complete compared to previous upgrades. My experience was (using Windows Insider) roughly 2 hours on both a laptop and a PC compared to about 45 minutes going from 1803 to 1807. Same internet speed, same specs on the confusers. On the plus side I haven't experienced any problems with this change. Already deleted Windows.old on both (after a new image creation).

Thanks for the warning.

I have downloaded Macrium and created an image backup and a bootable recovery USB drive, and also a recovery  drive by using Windows itself.

No trouble whatsoever and I have deleted windows.old

if you came from windows 7 I would suggest downloading Classic Start Menu

you can get it from ninite.com (along with tons of other software)

it will make the cancer inducing start menu (for me) into something you might recognize (and you keep both) - if you click on Start Menu (Windows) at the top it will bring up the ugly Metro menu you have right now

note that this is not the default way it will look when you install, just my personal preference on it.

I removed everything that wasn't useful, such as "help and support", log out and other things.

Or you could just customize and embrace the Windows 10 menu!

I agree.  It's really not that bad.

Hit the Windows key and start typing.  Job done.

Good call out to an excellent support site for downloading (and updating) third party, mostly open source software. Definitely won't be for everyone but that said I'm sure there will be some for everyone.

Particularly useful when doing a clean install and having a lot in the same place.
