Just dreadful. Once in debt, it's very difficult to repay. Impossible for some.

When you have money problems plus all the other daily issues and beatdowns...one can lose hope ..

Our his debts passed on to his relatives? It’s a family oriented culture    so does this come into play?

This especially if he had borrowed from a loan shark or a similar person, because the interest on the loan is horrendous as are the penalties on any default, so after a while, as you say, it does become impossible to repay the debt.
