If a tyre is of a hard compound it will not grip like a soft compound. Some OK compounds can harden with age/temps and not perform as one would expect.

As a poster commented, race cars warm up tyres to bring on the softness on tread and sidewalls so they flex and grip..

One can even improve traction with basic tyres by warming them up by what ever means one wants to use..

In the past natural rubber tyres do harden after time and definitely lose their grip, myself and a few other people in transport would purchase new tyres well before they were required, give them time to harden, nowadays I think more tyres are made using synthetic compounds hence they're not like tyres from years ago.
