I'm getting a lot of sinus infections here

Back home I would always get a sore throat before getting sick.

 

Here it starts by sinus blockage with a very bad headache and eventually fever.

 

And I have been getting a lot of these lately.

 

Is this food related in any way?

 

What would be the problem?

Try to avoid self-diagnosis and internet waffle as in certain circumstances this can be fatal.

 

Much easier to call on your insurance and go for a medical at the best hospital / clinic you can find.

I quite confidently can say i get far fewer nose and sinus sniffles etc here. Where did you come from. I came from a much colder climate. 

 

It sounds like something chronic. I would go in if it keeps reoccuring like you are describing.

Anyway, I'd rather avoid a hospital as I predict I may lrave with 2kg of pills including antibiotics and no answer as to why I'm getting these infections here. I do have a chronic sinusitis, but back home I'd never get sick from it.

I have found the same thing. Had to get antibiotics a few times. I swim a bit and go under water so I figure this may add to my problems. God only knows whats in the water here

You seem to be looking for the answer that will provide the best night's sleep tonight but seems a bit strange to me.  Most posters here go to hospital first and ask questions later.  Up to you.

If its happening a lot it could be your immune system is not functioning the way it should.  To many reasons why so a check up is needed

You should consult an ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist at a decent hospital who specializes in sinus stuff...and get their opinion/diagnosis... which, in my experience here with ENTs, probably has a 50% chance at least of being wrong... But, at least, the ENT doctors can hopefully spot anything obvious that's wrong.

 

In the meantime, in general, things that you can try on your own are:

 

1. regularly steaming your sinuses by inhaling from a bowl of some boiling water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil added (Kangaroo brand easily and cheaply available from Thai pharmacies). If you don't have a specific steamer for that, you can use a regular bowl and cover your head and the bowl with a towel to help contain the steam.

 

2. Read up on various methods of rinsing out your sinuses with a mixture of purified warm water with non-iodine salt added, in other words, a simple saline solution. Usually about 1-2 tsp of non-iodine salt mixed into about 16 oz. of warm, purified water (meaning not tap water, but boiled/filtered water that doesn't have chlorine or other typical Thai impurities in it.)

 

There are several ways of accomplishing that. Some people use a small pitcher type device called a 'Neti pot". There also are plastic squeeze bottles with a sinus tip on the end. I personally use a 50 ml plastic syringe that you can buy at most decent Thai pharmacies with a separately purchased special silicone sinus tip that goes on the needle end of the syringe (you don't use any needles with this, just the syringe and sinus tip.)

 

The Neti pot device, plastic squeeze bottle with sinus tip and silicone sinus tip for syringes are probably going to be hard to find in regular pharmacies here... But some of them probably can be found online via Lazada and also from online shops out in the real world outside Thailand.

I frequently piked up coughs, colds and had sinus issues when I lived in Bangkok, despite a fairly healthy lifestyle and good diet. When I left Bangkok I had no more problems. I put it down to something environmental in Bangkok, most likely the air quality, and perhaps dirty air-conditioners in my condo.

It could very well be the ridiculously polluted air, depending on where you are living. It is BAD up north.

Possible that your chronic sinusitis has worsened due to air pollution or something in the air you are allergic to....and/or an infection that may have set in.

 

Where in Thailand do you live?

 

Redoxan brand zinc + vit C effervescent tablets once a day helps in terms of immune system. But you may need to either move to cleaner air, treat underlying allergy and/or treat underlying infection that may have set in.

Air quality in Bangkok is very bad. Many people who never had sinus conditions before develop them when living in Bangkok and people with chronic sinus problems almost always get worse.

 

If it is possible for you to move to cleaner air, you should consider it.

 

And you definitely should see a  good ENT, it is ppssoible there is a chrionic low grade infection that is aggravating things. I can vouch for this  US trained one one who in my experience does not overtreat or give unnecessary drugs:

Most likely caused by air pollution.  I recognize the scenario. It won't get better until you relocate.  Although its relatively minor, this syndrome does cause a great deal of suffering as you are no doubt aware.  The primary cause is likely sinus pressure.

 

You may be able to mitigate its effects by using a corticosteroid nasal spray such as nasocort, and painkillers.  Limit your exposure to outside air, buy an air purifier, and close all your windows.  Don't walk on the street for long periods.  Exercise is extremely important, but can only be done indoors, or possibly early evening in the park.

 

Imo, you're on to a loser by remaining in Bangkok, because you will become even more sensitive to general irritants that otherwise wouldn't bother you, will contract colds more easily, and they will likely have heavier symptoms and follow on infections.

 

In other words, get out!

Would have been wrong because I feel better today.

Not sure if same issue or severity, but we've had some rain blow through last few days, humidity spikes  = pounding temple/sinus type headaches, clogged up head/nose, ringing in ears.   Although I don't get "sick", no progression into fever or anything like that.

 

Never had any noticeable or chronic allergy/sinus problems, but have noticed it since moving to Thailand.  Wet season in particular, I presume mildew and other stuff going on.  In and out of the air con exacerbates it.  Rained most of the day today, overcast and cool but humid, a/c off, just a fan, not so bad.

i get sinus infections often and post nasal drip which prevents me from sleeping.

when ever i get one, off to the hospital to see E,N,T doctor.

she looks at my nose and throat and gives me a prescription of drugs with a 2,000baht bill and i am happy until the next time.

it has to do with the weather, humidity, have similar problems but on top of that also have itching body, popping up pimples, rash.... I take Zyrtec (anti histamine) and it helps

Well, that's what happens, isn't it?: you feel ok for a few days, then the cycle of sinus pressure, and then a low grade infection.  It sounds very much like recurring URTI, and that is why antibiotics are really important for you right now if the doctor says so.  You could also come down with a chest infection, and tonsilitis, which will be even more painful.

 

Yes, undoubtedly the main problem is a perennial allergy.  As you now know, it is likely caused by air pollution, and there is no cure as such.  I guess you have to weigh up the benefits of living in Bangkok, which is a great place, but only when healthy.

 

Sadly for all of us, we have only been talking about the allergic effects of air pollution, whereas the long term effects on health can be catastrophic!
