The name in chinese is "黑人" means "Black People"

The company(Hawley&Hazel)was founded in 1933,in Shanghai.

And maybe because of the WW2 or the Civil War of China. They move to Hongkong and Taiwan.

After Colgate purchased 50 percent of the firm in 1985, religious groups, African-Americans, and company shareholders protested the racially offensive nature of the brand. After more than three years of criticism, Colgate switched the name from Darkie to Darlie and modified the logo to a less crude version of a black man.

Great write up - I was in Malaysia in the early to mid 90’s and Darkie brand was still prevalent

So it was maybe 95 not 85

When I first came to Thailand I did a few years work as a teacher at a big school. There was about 40 foreign teachers of whom 4 were from Africa. One day, I mentioned to one of the African teachers that I'd seen this advert on TV that was racist. He laughed and told me it was him who starred in it. He knew it was bad but thought of the money. He got twenty thousand baht for doing the commercial. True story.
