Asleep at the wheel: Three women on a motorcycle all dead

Three women travelling on a motorcycle in Krabi were killed when a delivery pick-up truck slammed into them at high speed.

The driver of the pick-up is thought to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The incident happened on the Southern Seaboard Road KM marker 20 heading into Krabi.

Dead at the scene were Monthira, 27, who was driving the Honda Wave, and her two pillion passengers Sudsee, 42, and Khiaw, 54.

Rescuers found two men seriously injured in an overturned Revo pick-up. Natthanai, 32 and Wanchai, 30 were taken to hospital.

The dead victims had been visiting relatives and were on their way home.

It is believed that the driver of the pick-up fell asleep at the wheel, a condition known as "lap nai" in Thai.

Thaivisa notes that signs advising motorists to rest if they feel "lap nai" is coming on are posted all over Thailand.

It's a hereditary condition.

Typical courier/delivery vehicle.

The same pressure/haste/overtime working like in many countries.

Asleep at the wheel but driving at a high rate of speed?

my experience and logic say when people are tired, they drive slower usually much less than the speed limit....

the excuse is nothing but to save face; fact - going too fast and a poor driver

the charge should be vehicular homicide but Thai legal system/culture lacks the balls to admit accountability so another case falls to brake failure/asleep/ wet road,  anything but individual accountability for poor driving behavior....

a sad reflection of the culture....

A driver fell asleep in a car and sailed off a roadside bank through the top of a tree opposite my house. When he fell asleep he apparently pushed his foot down on the accelerator.

Please thai visa can you start reporting what these muppets actually get for a prison sentence.

Nothing has changed so the daily outcome is a repeat of years gone by....
