No alcohol sales all day today: Jail for lawbreakers

The Royal Thai police have reminded everyone that today is a Buddhist holiday and there is to be no alcohol sold throughout the country - or else. 

 

The word came from up on high in the government via the RTP chief General Chakthip Chaijinda to his spokesman Pol Col Krissada Pattanacharoen. 

 

The ban for Visakha Bucha Day is in place from midnight last night to midnight tonight - a 24 hour period. 

 

People caught selling alcohol are liable to a 10,000 baht fine and six months in jail - and Krissada said the police mean business. 

 

The holiday marks the birth, enlightenment and death of the Lord Buddha. 

 

Monday is a national day off because the holiday falls on a weekend.

On the last such "alcohol-free" day, I went down to the mini mart in my condo complex to get a beer and there was a huge sign on the coolers saying "no alcohol sold today". I did a u-turn, but the security guard caught me and said: "Just ASK".  All I had to do was open the cooler and get the beer. Farang privilege.

The pitiful thing is, they will probably send officers round pubs and restaurants to check. If only they allocated this much man power to serious crime offenders. We all know people are still going to find a drink if they really want one, why not set up a breathalyser road checks and if they are really keen to find out whos selling, offer a reduced fine if they can prove they drank in a certain bar. That would put the cat amongst the pigeons. Bust one perp and get one free. ????

Possibly so. However, I am not one of them. I have been drunk about 3 - 4 times in my whole life, and didn't enjoy the aftermath. I am lucky to have some kind of internal switch which, after 2 or 3 alcoholic drinks, says I've had enough. I drink on weekends, and enjoy it. Don't drink on weekdays.

Great post UNTIL u had go on with that last sentence. Nobody has ever said here, on any such thread, that they just couldn't survive without alcohol for a day. Or that they were gonna "go postal", keel over or commit harakiri. That is just something created by the booze adverse lot. Got a bone on for drink and drinkers for whatever reason.

I have a different issue with this... 

 

Would a law have to be passed by Parliament for such an action to become illegal and a finable or a jailing offense?

 

The idea that someone in the Police Force, no matter how senior, can announce that something is illegal and therefor subject to fines is plan wrong. I'll use an extreme and unrealistic exaggeration to illustrate my point: What if the same senior members of the Police Force announced that wearing green T-shirts was against the law?

 

Is there actually ANY law at all against drinking alcohol today? or is just yet another ill thought out announcement which just shows the Police believe they can make up the law when they want?

 

If no such law exists I can't see how this announcement can have any legal bearing whatsoever.
