medical insurance for thai g/f or spouse while in foreign country

Featured Replies

If someone should succeed in getting a tourist visa for their thai g/f or wife I think it is important to have some sort of medical insurance for them. I am thinking trip insurance would suffice. Now in a different scenario, if someone say from England brings his wife back to England how would he make sure she had medical insurance for her stay should it be a lengthy one there? As an example my understanding, and correct me if I am wrong, is that in order for a British citizen to be eligible for England's health insurance they have to live full-time in England for more then 6 months to be covered. Could the thai spouse of the English citizen also get England's medical insurance while she was living in England with her husband?

For myself I was looking into getting a permanent visa for my thai g/f to come to the US but have decided to not go  that route because my thai g/f and soon to be wife would not want to live full-time in the US since she has a daughter in Thailand. Also she would not like the cold in the winter. Also getting her health insurance, other then trip insurance would be next to impossible because the only way I was fortunately able to get health insurance in Thailand was because I am living btw 10-11 months there so my retirement health insurance was changed in order that I was covered in Thailand. Now, if I had proceeded to get a permanent visa for my thai g/f and we lived in the US for say 3-4 months my health insurance would have reverted back to another plan which only would cover me in the US. When we went back to Thailand I would be screwed because my health insurance coverage would only be for the US.

So  in summation, unless or until my thai g/f decides she wants to live permanently in the US, my best bet is to try and get her a tourist visa so she can accompany me for the usual 1- 1 1/2 months that I go back to the US. I can then get her trip insurance and I will not lose my overseas coverage when I return to Thailand where, as stated previously, I live btw 10-11 months each year.

When my wife first came here to the UK I bought a 12 month BUPA policy online from Thailand. It was about £100 in 2016.

I struggled to find the BUPA site in Thailand last time I looked as I think they have changed their name in Thailand but it's well worth finding them.
