A fire swept through an old market in Lamphun’s Muang district on Wednesday night.

Over 30 fire engines and more than 200 firefighters took about two hours to control the blaze at the Nong Dok Market after the fire broke out at 11.56pm.

The fire started from a grocery booth and swept through over 20 booths that were connected to each other before spreading to nearby shops, including a fireworks shop.

While firefighters were fighting the blaze, explosions were heard from the fireworks shop.

Lamphun governor Ansus Samphantharat directed the firefighting efforts.

Local residents said the market was over 100 years old and it is a popular tourist destination. The market is divided into many zones and has various goods, including fresh food and farm products and consumer goods. The market operates around the clock.

No casualties were reported.

Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
