Thailand’s Maya Bay settles into an extended period of rest

You can look but you can’t touch. Maya Bay’s beach, closed last year to allow coral restoration and beach recovery, is likely to remain closed to visitors for many years, even up to five.

The famous Koh Phi Phi Ley beach and bay, made famous in the 2000 movie The Beach, needs time for its ecology to fully recover years of tourist abuse, this according to the Phi Phi national park chief Vorapot Lomlim.

“Maya Bay must continue to be closed until nature has fully recovered. We expect it will take four to five years.”

Great ;

I'll continue to look without touching ..

five years ?

Why not indefinitely and not only Maya Beach ...

I feel guilty about my avatar. I was one of the millions of tourists that helped destroy Maya Bay.

(No guilt, I did like the herd. It was an awesome day).

My understanding is that most of the damage was caused by the crews of the boats that brought  the tourists there, running too many trips, anchoring indiscriminately and not supervising their guests.

Am I wrong?

No matter if it was the crews of the boats or damage caused directly by tourists (which is the same as your 3rd point), the root of the cause is too many tourists on a tiny patch of land/sea.

yeah keep it closed. boats can get close to the beach and tourist can take photos, done.

they should extend this to many other beaches and islands too.
