The Top 10 Most Politically Incorrect Things About The Movie, "300."

Featured Replies

I wonder how much of the story is 'actually' true?

I'm not quite sure what you mean?

Sparta (Laconia- Lacadaemon) was a real place

Leonidas was a real king of Sparta

Thermopylae (the Hot Gates) was (is) a real place where the armies of the Greek city states faced up the army of Xerxes I and where they were betrayed by Ephialtes who showed the Persians a pass which landed them behind the army of Leonidas.

It's the place where 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians delayed the army of Xerxes, which consisted of 100,000 men, for 3 days. This delay allowed the Greeks to regroup and go on to fight the battles of Salamis and Platea, defeating the Persians and driving them back out out of Greece.

If it hadn't have been for Leonidas you'd probably be speaking Farsi and worshipping Ahura Mazda now.

I wonder if they went to the effort of looking at the people of that area when doing the make up. The movie Spartacus staring Eric Banner was supposed to be set around the same time. All the cast had short hair cuts, clean chins and no extraneous body hair. Never seen a gathering of Greeks, Italians or anyone from that part of the world without the odd 5 o'clock shadow, that movie lacked even a moustache or even hair on the arms.

Funny, David Wendham was in that one too :o may be his career is taking a new turn following his staring role in Steve Irwin's funeral.

According to CNN today, the Iranians are all p1ssed off at this movie. They say it's part of an American plot to portray Iran in the worst possible light.

:o

"CGI = Computer-generated imagery, a film-making technology"

Some people are reallly anti-CGI, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. It depends on how it's used. I'm sure they'll use it for big shots of the 'cast of thousands' - it certainly works well for these.

Yeah, Javad Shamqadri, a cultural advisor to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said it was "plundering Iran's historic past and insulting this civilization".

He branded the film "psychological warfare" against Tehran and its people.

Maybe we won't have to send in the troops after all! :D Link

"Flyboys" was done rather well with CGI, although they mistakenly gave the old biplanes the climbing ability of late WWII fighters. :o

I really liked Sin City, the previous movie done by the director. So this one I will most definitly see.

And the Iranian paper carrying a headline Hollywood declearing war on Iran" - yeez, I better buy two tickets. ^^

Yes, that's the sort of thing they get wrong, and things look 'too' perfect sometimes.

The scene where the guy ran along the top of the exploding zeppelin was pretty cool though. :o

Initially it was 300 Spartans and 4000+ Greeks and Greek allies. The night of the second day realizing they had been outflanked Leonidas ordered the withdrawl of his men. 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians led by Leonidas stayed in the pass to fight.

The Persian infantry was lightly armored and built for speed. Perfect for overrunning villages and killing civilians. Sounds like things haven't changed much. :o

Whoops...here's the link :D

I did modify'em some... :o

I'm just not a big fan of CGI flicks. If I want a cartoon I'll watch The Simpsons.

Now your talking...

see my sig.

Can't help myself. Everytime I see the word "Thespians" in these "300" reviews, I expect the cast of Monty Python to charge out holding pony head sticks and papiere mache swords. :o

BTW, Steven Colbert did a good segment on "300" -- "well, I want to watch 1-299 first."

Here's another Colbert caption for all you scientific bully boys to use when you lambast the opposition for using "fake" experts: Refer to those "Dr Qwacks" on the other side as "Lab Coat Larrys". :D

Who is Steven Colbert? Should the rest of the world outside of the USA recognise his name?

Oh, Endure! Knowing your sense of wit and sarcasm, you would love this show. Comedy Central, honey. He, along with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, attack anything anal in the news. Available on the net. A bit US-focused, but hey, everybody is bashing the US these days, so why not know thine enemies? :D If you don't like him, I will stop posting for 22 minutes. :D

Oh, forgot to add that both shows are parodies of real newscasts. :o

I refuse to watch movies Hollywood ripped off from other countries. People told me it was good, just like they told me the departed was good, but I won't see them, nope no sir.

Flyboys is about the Lafayette Esquadrille, the American volunteers that flew for the French Air Force. It was written American screenwriter Blake Evans

It was an independent that no studio would back.

5555, on the Colbert show, the democratic senator for Kentucky agreed that he would put kittens in a woodchipper if there was so other solution for them. 5555

Blake stole the idea from a Thai movie called First Flight, which was shown, only in parts as it is not finished yet, at Cannes. First Flight Movie Info This is also based on real events.

The Lafayette Esquadrille was an actual squadron from the first world war. Though there are similarities in the story, it is not a ripoff of First Flight, and the producers of First Flight even praise the film.

I'm looking forward to seeing First Flight though.

maybe i would wait for the Dvd :o

Don't know much about 300's politic but I do know they all have such yummy body built! and it's a real bloody film. That bad (gay) dude looks real weird and sicko tho.

I know about the real fighter pilots, so I was not speaking of the similarities in the story but in the way that Flyboys was filmed, much like First Flight.
