Mae Hong Son's Pai District Office has organised a funeral assistance fund, requiring members to recycle garbage in a bid to tackle the northern tourist city's garbage problem.

District chief Sangkhom Khatchiangsaen and Pai Red Cross head Wilawan Khatchiangsaen and officials, inspected the garbage-separating project on Friday.

The "recycle garbage" funeral assistance fund requires a member to sell recycle garbage three times and to have at least Bt200 in the account before they are entitled to a funeral assistance payment. To maintain membership and entitlement to financial aid, a member must sell recycled garbage at least once a month.

The unique fund, to motivate local people to participate in selling and recycling garbage, was established after a Buddhist forest robe merit making ceremony was held on June 8 by civil servants, tourist business people, local residents and schools. Seven tonnes of recycled garbage was collected.
