I guess yes he is a convicted smuggler into Australia, yes he is a deportee from Australia

Has he committed any crimes in Thailand for which he has been tried and convicted?

Is he in breach of the Thai constitution by standing for election?

When is a person rehabilitated?

Just asking. being devils advocate

yes, nobody convicted of drug offences can run for public office. Constitution was broken by the party he was running for, as well as by the PM, who knew well about his conviction but decided to ignore it.

You can judge for yourself whether he fit the eligibility to be a ministers. As for me he failed under item 5 and 7.

Thailand 2017 constitution.

Section 160 • Eligibility for head of government A Minister must: 1. be of Thai nationality by birth; 2. be not less than thirty-five years of age; • Minimum age of head of government 3. have graduated with not lower than a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent; 4. be of evident integrity; 5. not have behaviour which is a serious violation of or failure to comply with ethical standards; 6. not be under any of the prohibitions under section 98; 7. not be a person sentenced by a judgment to imprisonment, irrespective of the finality of the case or a suspension of the punishment, except for an offence committed through negligence, a petty offence or a defamation offence; 8. not be a person whose office has been vacated on the grounds of committing any prohibited act under section 186 or section 187, for a period of less than two years up to the date of appointment.

he also bought his PhD degree from a bogus university

for those 2 offences he should not stand to public office posts.

Those, who vetted him (political party he stood for during election and the PM, who invited him to his government) should be held responsible

Their "defense" would be that

5.) Royal Pardon

7.) Didn't happen in Thailand

#3 and #4 seems like fails too?

Perhaps the biggest issue here is that the public loses faith in all the important institutions here, not just the government du jour, when this sort of behavior is condoned.

I understand why he can't resign now, and the Generals can't let him, as they've already corrupted themselves too much on this issue, and backing out now would be to admit that level of moral corruption.

Short of a rare blood disorder, nasty bump on the head in a car accident, or defenestration, not seeing a way out for them on this one, so must rally the troops and stand firm.

I tried to find more about his conviction.

Curious he doesn't show in any searches in Thailand nor (with & without VPN) in Australia, especially with regard to Australia drug conviction and prison to which he admits did occur.

Did he use a different name there?

The only place I find his name "Thammanas Phromphao" is a search in Thai Visa Google but only in connection with his recent appointment as deputy agriculture minister. Yet, he was described as "a key figure in the coalition leading Phalang Pracharat Party."

Try Manat  Bonphlom the name he was using and arrested under.

Failing to report a drug deal seems a strange offence.

Don't worry newsflash,  misunderstanding alert he thought his friend said can you import  this "heron" for me and like the Thai Ital guy being a  nature  lover he agreed.

However, Thammanas defended himself by saying he served an eight-month sentence in Australia for failing to report a drug-trafficking deal.

   Priceless.

the PM exactly knew everything but chose to ignore it. Because crime wasn't done in thailand and because he wasn't sentenced here he had the right to be minister

The PM may well have known everything as the guy was allegedly in the army at the time.

From FB this morning

The Fake news office is in full swing i thought it was to stop fake news not generate it

A weekend edition of a "National" newspaper  in Thailand claims that accusations against Thammanat Prompao were invented as part of a conspiracy between me,(AMM) Jonathan Mark Head, and Michael Ruffles (one of The Sydney Morning Herald journalists who actually broke the story by uncovering Australian court documents).

How stupid or arrogant can the PM be, trying to exonerate or justify a criminal as Minister. Most people see it for what it is and Prayut has lost serious credibility over this one. He's done stupid things, but this is a biggie!

He got caught red handed not with the drugs but with other gang members in a room that was under surveillance by Aussie cops and he did his full sentence of 4 years. F... Knows where they got 8 months from. This whole article is BS. He wasn't thammant at that time he was Manat Bonphlom and he did the full 4 at Parklea prison.

He was possibly on remand for 8 months awaiting trial

You're gonna be nicked, just in case....

In fact, it's for your own safety, coz even if you haven't done anything, you'll still be banged up. ????

"They might have done nothing wrong, but their aides might have..."

Quite simply, they're in the wrong gang, & need to be 'dealt with'.

Edit: Just seen that the article is 3 years old.

And in the other journal an article about a Bitcoin suspect who says he was duped

Mmm interesting times ahead, could this be seen as a cynical move to remove opposition, under other guises? Oh so old news of no value to current situation

The irony was that Thammanat Prompow was in the 2016 Prawit black list of 'influential figures'. Yet in just 3 years, he is in Prawit's government as an influential minister.

Wait a second, so he is a convicted criminal in another country but an honorable member of parliament in Thailand?

Mind you his conviction is not political but drugs related and yet he is an honorable member of parliament?

And he wants to take legal action?

That's the way the guilty defend themselves in Thailand - legal action scares his critics into silence.
