Running Empty: Water officials to splash B277mn on private sources as reservoirs fail to fill

PHUKET: Phuket’s main water authorities are turning to smaller privately owned ponds and lakes to ensure water supply remains adequate as the island’s three main reservoirs are failing to fill due to this year’s diminished rainfall.

Worse, water is either pumped out of the reservoirs as fast as it arrives or doesn’t even make it to the reserves as water channels that flow into the reserves are sourced to directly feed water mains serving houses and businesses across the island.

As the government agency responsible for ensuring that water reserves are adequate for the island’s needs, the Phuket Provincial Irrigation Office (PPIO) is seriously concerned.

True, but how many hotels/condos in Phuket 500 years ago.  Trouble is that water management has not kept up with the huge increase in building over the last 30 years.  And even today nothing is being done. Just trust the rain to come.

Few people drink the water from tap. Most householders buy water for cooking. What happens when these private water sources dry up??? I was at Bang Niew Reservoir yesterday. Surprised to see they haven't started deepening the reservoir. The sand at the bottom must be worth millions!

All of Mankind is dependant upon Rainfall for their very existence since the dawn of time.

A little longer than 2000 Years.

Some have learnt how to manage water... some have managed to learn nothing about water....

Take your guess which one is Thailand !

Relief in sight?  Pissing down at the moment.

There are many more places other than Phuket where there is already a water crisis or one coming. Very little consistent rain anywhere this year! Anyone possessing a reliable water source will possess gold !

Congratulations.  You've passed the Phuket gov't exam for becoming an officer of the water board.    Just kidding, but really that's what the real officials have been thinking after a bit of rain apparently.

Half an hours worth. The plants will suck it all up with none going to the reservoirs or, the water table.

Desalination? Hello? Israel cracked desalination costs and it’ll be cheaper than buying water from private ponds!

Must be time for the Governor to order all responsible agencies to do something about it, again.
