Chromebook: issues with the space key

The space key i. fails and ii. often acts as if some ghost was pressing it. Then the cursor will move to the right (without me touching the Thinkpad E-131E.

 

The issue came and went, making me wonder if it's software?

 

Would an external USB keyboard work?
