BANGKOK, 20 July 2019 (NNT) - The proposed increase in the minimum wage would be welcomed by employees but the private sector is opposed to it. SME operators might be so adversely affected they might go out of business.

Suphan Mongkholsuthee, president of the Federation of Thai Industries, commented that the proposed increase in the minimum wage is yet to get approval from the Tripartite Committee. He said the minimum wage cannot be set as a flat rate nationwide. He said the minimum wage should depend on the economic conditions of each area. If the minimum wage were increased, it would benefit over three million migrant workers, who would remit their incomes to their home country. For that reason, the money would not be circulated within Thailand.

The Federation of Thai Industries president suggested that the government create a Social Security fund by deducting 5% of the employee’s wage in addition to the 2.75% in supplementary fund, so that it will total 7.75%. Such a measure may be implemented on temporary basis or may last for six months to one year or until the economic situation has improved.

The employer’s 5% contribution should remain unchanged to add to the employee’s purchasing power instead of increasing the minimum wage. That measure will not seriously affect the employer. The private sector considers the current wages of most people are appropriate. Besides, the wages should be paid in proportion to the employee’s working skills.

We live on three rai in Phitsanulok Province surrounded by rice farms. The locals call it D&G. There is always something that needs to be done or help needed on a project. We pay B300 a day for these daily workers and they tend to come and go depending on the season. After work was over for the day, one of our part-time workers said she couldn't come tomorrow but her 17-year nephew could.

The next day happened to be a Wednesday and Thai school was in session. Right off this bat, I knew this kid was going to be a winner. And he was. He lasted two days and was told his services were not needed. Why? He couldn't put his phone down while using the lawnmower.  My wife and I told him numerous times to no avail. He was paid B600 for two days and then started complaining in the village that D&G had ripped him off. He thought he was worth B350 per day. I think we overpaid by B250. Last I heard he wasn't working but still playing on his phone...

Last increase in minimum wages led to nothing but an increase in prices for rice and eggs and sunflower oil. So, that extra satangs would end up in other peoples pockets anyway.

If they work a 6 day 8 hour week that is 19200 baht per month.  I say give us parity and raise it to 65,000 baht per month, just like the visa requirement.

Oh, wait.....

Nevermind.

With that philosophy a lot of high ranking government officials are to be working free.

Thailand is a Tech Hub. I've seen it on the BTS. What sort of workers do Tech Hub companies get for 300 baht a day?

It would mean that wages have doubled since Yingluck's populistic vote promise; a governmental promise to be kept by the private industry .........

Just go ahead and catapult Thailand even further off the competitive platform of economy! Somtam awaits!

He thought he was worth B350 per day.

Like university graduates who say there are no jobs because they want to start as managers on $60,000 a year and not at the bottom where everyone else started.

The filthy rich loose just as much money as they make due to utter incompetence and lack of care by the staff .

why on earth do you need 5 staff in a tiny ice cream shop and still customers wait .

how much wastage and and theft.

i have said it before and will say it again, staff who are of value always get paid way above minimum wage, the slackers half of the time are not even worth the minimum wage , they cost money to employ

The previous government announcement said the daily wage would be increased to 425b. Why can’t they give the increase in steps ? Would be better for everyone. Just like the VAT which they have been trying to raise for years from 7 to 8%. If this was done in 4 steps they would have been at 8% 2 years ago but common sense here is in short supply.

We can't have the Elite and others who hold major shareholdings in Thai businesses allowing their surfs to get paid nearer a survival income can we ? That will never do.

Keep the Peasants downtrodden.

Whatever next ? They will want to be able to feed their kids more than once every 2 days.

And there's the truth... slave labour exists in Thailand.

I will laugh my socks off when China finishes it's S.E.Asia expansion projects and all the migrant workers return to their home countries to work in shiny new factories... who will build all the elite mansions then?

what a shame!

325 baht to 400 baht and all this fuss!

in the meantime, they say inflation here stated like 1 to 2 percent but in reality it is a lot more.

things get and are expensive.

and funny to claim like business go bankrupt.

and b s to push SME s in front like big business are fine with this!!!

just raise this min wage to 400 baht! and let some rich businessmen earn f in less! and people in need and low income get more!

this will also stimulate the demand and economy nicely. which also means strong Thai baht can go down.
