Deputy Agricultural Ministers observe drought situation in Tak

TAK, 20 July 2019 (NNT) - Three Deputy Ministers of Agriculture and Cooperatives have observed water situation in service areas of Bhumibol Dam, delivering drought mitigation policies to help villagers.

 

Ongoing drought disaster has caused water shortages and affected many people in various provinces. The Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed his concerns for affected villagers, and assigned officials at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to provide assistance to affected persons and solve the issue.

 

Today, the Deputy Ministers of Agriculture and Cooperatives, namely Capt Thammanas Prompao, Mr Praphat Phothasoothon, and Ms Mananya Thaiset, led officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Department of Land Development, the Rice Department, the Department of Agricultural Extension, the Royal Irrigation Department to observe water situation at Bhumibol Dam in Sam Ngao district, Tak province, where the group held talk with Tak Governor Charoenrit Sanguansat, as well as provincial governors and villagers from 13 provinces in Ping River and Chao Phraya River basins to discuss water issues and inform villagers of official data.

 

Bhumibol Dam is one of the four main dams in Chao Phraya River basin which play an important role in delivering water to villagers in many provinces. Tak province these days still has low water input into the dam’s reservoir, resulting in low water level in the reservoir. The province has initially coordinated with the royal rainmaking unit to conduct their operation over the reservoir and farm areas, as well as closely monitoring the water situation and asked for cooperation from farmers to adopt water saving farming practices.

 

The Deputy Ministers of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the group then observed water availability and conditions in the reservoir from Bhumibol Dam, collecting data to be used in water management and allocation plans to prevent and mitigate drought disaster. The group then traveled to visit Sirikit Dam in Tha Pla district, Uttaradit, where they received briefing on water situation at Sirikit dam, observed water availability and conditions, and similarly delivered drought fighting policies.
