webfact 183860
Transport Minister wants to raise the speed limit to 120 kmph on all large roads File photo New transport minister Saksayam Chidchob - whose family are famous for having a racetrack in Isaan - wants to raise the speed limit on main roads in Thailand. The proposal was among a swathe of measures proposed yesterday at a meeting of the Transport Ministry to divvy up jobs and responsibilities among senior personnel. Saksayam wants several matters dealt with within the next month to improve safety, ease economic pressure on the public and improve the convenience of the people. One measure is to increase the speed limit on all four lane roads to 120 kilometer per hour. This would mean motorways and expressways, said Manager. Picture: Manager Saksayam said that this would improve traffic flow. Most accidents, he said, were on two lane roads and due to bad driving. Some portions of roads like the Chonburi Motorway already have a 120 kmph limit but this would apply to all sections and all big roads. The police would be consulted in order to effect change in this matter. In addition the minister wants roadworks on Rama 2 Road and elsewhere completed quickly, wants to see action on PM 2.5 emissions from lorries and public transport vehicles and proposes a ban on all 10 wheel up trucks in Bangkok and Phuttamonthon except for midnight to 4 am. A reduction in expressway, motorway and tollway fees is also being proposed to ease the economic burden on the public. This will be 5 - 10 baht. The minister has also promised that the issue of Grab Taxi will be resolved in three months. The Chidchob family run a Moto GP track in their NE stronghold of Buriram. Well he is correct about the bad driving, but I think he is forgetting that excessive speed also plays a vital role, so suggesting that bad drivers be allowed to go even faster, is hardly the best way to bring the unbelievable carnage down. Does nothing for road safety and is purely a fine gathering exercise.

colinneil 84379
Just another crazy, brain dead idea, from another useless sod, appointed to a position it is clear he has no idea about how to manage things properly. VocalNeal 12928
Just "the new broom" syndrome. Now if we can just get all the commuter numpties on BKK expressways to break the law the traffic would move a lot quicker.
300sd 2841
Think they need a new transport minister... And I would suggest they lower that speed on the Chonburi Motorway. Lunatics doing 120 plus, bumper to bumper, is not my idea of road safety.
faraday 13887
Yessssss, this is the sort of 'sensible' thing I expected the lovely, new & Democratic Government to do! Well done! As Rookiescot says: "What could possibly go wrong?"

While agreeing with you, 'allowing them to go faster' is only seen as an issue if stopped by the police anyway. Won't increasing the speed limit only have the effect of reducing the police's income, as they will only be able to extort money on vehicles travelling over 120 kph? boonrawdcnx 1740
Maybe the transport minister should visit Germany and see a real Autobahn network before he raises the speed limit. I mean a real motorway without the roadside som-tam stalls, families of 5 crossing on a small bike, overloaded pick-up trucks, ridiculous u-turns on a major highway or a bloody herd of buffalos around the next corner! Crashing at 90 km/h in a modern car with good safety features one still has a very good chance to survive - from 120 km/h upwards that chance gets very slim. It could of course be that the minister wants to defend Thailand’s first place in the world - for fatal road accidents that is. Cadbury 16608
These ministerial fools are coming out of the woodwork like weevils. The recent outpourings of idiocy notably from the Tourism Minister, the Education Minister and now the Transport Minister is following a pattern. It is not a coincidence. The first two were from the Democrat Party and this goose is from the Bhumjaithai Party. They all have something in common; they were traitors to their voters and defected to the Palang Parachat Party and voted for Prayut to become Prime Minister. For that they had to be rewarded and so PM Prayut repaid that political debt by making them ministers, regardless of whether they were idiots without qualification or not. Allowing them near the trough is Prayut's "thank you". You can be sure there will be more outbursts of stupidity from these Prayut hand picked ministers who have been rewarded for the duplicity they have shown their voters and supporters. Thailand goes further into the mire.
webfact 183860
Speed limit on four-lane roads to be increased to 120 km/h By The Nation The speed limit on four-lane highways nationwide will be increased from 90 kilometres per hour to 120 km/h, Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said on Tuesday. Saksayam said he will ask the Highway Department, the Rural Highway Department and the Land Transport Department to work with the Royal Thai Police to amend the law and regulations to increase the speed limit on highways with four lanes on each side. Saksayam said he will instruct the three agencies of the Transport Ministry to finish the amendments within one month so that a new ministerial regulation to increase the speed limit can be enacted. The transport minister said he will also instruct his ministry’s agencies to study the possibility of allowing trucks to run on roads in Bangkok and suburban areas from midnight to 4am in addition to between 10am and 3pm. The study must be completed in a month and will then be sent to the Road Management Committee, which is chaired by the prime minister, for final approval, Saksayam said. The minister said he would also speed up the enforcement of the Bhumjai Thai’s policy of legalising ride-sharing services, such as Grab, as alternative means of transport for the public. The policy was promised during the election campaigns. He said the plan to legalise Grab and other ride-sharing services must be implemented within three months. Saksayam said he would order a study into the lowering of tolls of the motorways and elevated tollways by Bt5 to Bt10, adding the new rates must not affect concession contracts and that the study must also be completed in one month. In addition, all non-air-conditioned buses in Bangkok, which are decommissioned after their service life expires, will be replaced by air-conditioned buses. He will also order electric trains on the lines under the ministry to lower fares within a month. The electric trains slated to offer lower fares include the Airport Rail Link and the Purple Line, he said. The ministry will also try to increase the ratio of goods transported by railways to roads from 5 to 10 per cent to 30 per cent and this policy will be implemented within three years to reduce road congestion, Saksayam added. Regarding air transport, the ministry will move ahead with plans to expand both the Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports to increase their combined capacity to cope with 150 million passengers per year within three years. The ministry will also have state-owned Thai Airways International and Thai Smiles reschedule their domestic flights so that the last flights each day would go to provinces, not Bangkok. This would make it convenient for passengers to fly to Bangkok the following morning, Saksayam added. CharlieH 43705
Speed limits won't matter ! They do exactly as they please anyway, because there is little to no enforcement. Even when there is, the consequences are not a deterrent either. It just means a lesser charge when they kill/maime someone as they won't have been speeding when they did it.
