"Famous department store" say nothing about "death escalator"

Daily News said that a "famous department store" had yet to comment on an escalator that many online were saying nearly caused death and injury.

"Wutthichai Plortphai" went online with pictures of the damaged escalator that he said were taken by him at a well known department store in downtown Nakorn Sri Thammarat in Thailand's south.

He was told to delete the pictures which he did. Then he went online again to say he was warning his relatives and friends about the danger..."What was wrong with that?"

He said that shoppers fled for their lives as the escalator disintegrated before their very eyes.

Daily News said that many online were suggesting that the department store in question should do more for the safety of shoppers. Some claimed that the escalator had had problems before.

No one from the store was admitting anything, the media said.

Thaivisa notes that Thailand has strict defamation laws making it problematical for individuals and the media to call out large corporations on issues such as this.

A large number of negative stories in the Thai media refer to organisations such as stores, schools and hotels as "a famous this and that".

Looks very much like the result of lack of lubrication on the step axle,at least the safety devices worked stopping the machine quickly.

The pictures of the escalator clearly shows the name of a famous artist who was "Sitting on the dock of the bay"

Otis mall huh, but I never go there. BTW. People say, Otis needs maintenance, always problematic in LOS, as maintenance costs money.

There's one thing that would make this country move forward, remove those defamation laws.

But ... escalators only go up or down.

IIRC An escalator somewhere in T/L actually managed to trap and kill a young child a few years ago.. perhaps in Bangkok.. But I don't recall the final outcome - probably just brushed under the carpet (as usual).

That's a new one for me...I've never seen an escalator with carpet.

Why can't the department store be named when the escalator has nothing to do with them, apart from that it is located in their store? It is the escalator company, whose name is clearly displayed, who are responsible for maintaining the escalator. Otis is a respectable international company, but it does employ Thai workers (because the law says they have to).............????????

Business as usual in Thailand. Don't admit, deny everything, don't lose face

Since those most likely to be defamed, and for just reason in many instances, are those with money and power those laws are unlikely to be changed. If they are loosened there would need to be language included that would outline severe penalties for fraudulent claims aimed to damage those who are not guilty.

I'm guessing that the owners of the department store would be concerned that people

would associate their business with a deadly escalator, and choose to shop elsewhere.

I wonder how centrally located that department store is?

There is only one department store in Nakhon Si Thammarat and it belongs to a Swiss family.
