Featured Replies

For the past few months I have been hearing this said with an increasing occurence and even recently have seen it posted on this forum.....

"MY BAD"

meaning I am at fault or sorry its my fault.

Does anyone else hear this?

Whats it all about?

Where does it originate from?

As I say its only the last few months that I have heard it?

PS Sorry if this isnt to the 'normal' bedlam standards :o .........but I just would like to know the origin of this 'my bad'

A couple of posters have used it lately.

I have heard it on TV but only very recently.

But it seems to be used often in conversations I hear.

I am British and never heard it before :o

The origin of 'My bad'

OK got that, so now I know where it originates from. But that was over 15 yrs ago. I have never heard it until very recently.

Is there some 'new' celebrity or star that now says it which in turn leads to others repeating it? Is there another reason?

Or is it just me that hasnt heard it before?

sorry Jack , I suspect it's just you ........................... :o

I'm an American and I've never used it....and I don't think I've ever heard it being used...except maybe on TV and I'm not even sure about that. I think its probably one of those pimpley face adolescent slang words that every generation of pimpley faced adolescents create for their cohort so they have something to share besides pimple medicine.

Wow!!! Cool!!! Bitchen!!! As if!!!! My bad!!!

I never use "my bad" because it just sounds dumb, but it is indeed widely used in many American circles, especially in California. It is at this point very dated slang. Not cool or current at all.

Many places have there own slang which often means the opposite of what is said. 'Wicked' meaning something was good, ie 'I was at a wicked party last night!' This is a Liverpool one. In Dublin we used to say things were 'massive' not meaning big, but great or entertaining.

I'm sure we can all think of others. Maybe this could be a separate thread...

George Orwell was a little bit off on the time-scale, but spot-on the money for language corruption.

Un-good.

:o

I've heard it mainly used in sports especially basketball. It's just a cool way of admitting when it's your fault that you've made a mistake. It diffuses the anger and disappointment and ego uncertainty and allows everyone to get back to playing the game as it is unfolding. It also recognizes that, hey, mistakes are gonna happen, one's been made, play on. If no one recognizes any mistakes it makes everyone nervous that the same thing is going to happen next time.
