Germany to cut 35 million euros in funds to Brazil for Amazon preservation - newspapers

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Germany decided to suspend 35 million euros (32.6 million pounds) in funds sent to Brazil to finance projects aimed at preserving the Amazon forest due to increasing deforestation, Brazilian media outlets reported on Saturday.

 

The move reflects "great concerns with an increasing deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon," the German embassy in Brazil told Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, adding that the cut does not affect the Amazon Fund, to which Germany is a key donor.

 

According to O Globo newspaper, the decision concerns only funds destined to new projects financed by the Ministry of Environment.

 

German diplomats could not be immediately reached for comment.

 

Deforestation in the Brazil's rainforest surged 67% in the first seven months of the year, according to Brazil's space research agency, though the government has claimed the data is unreliable and misleading.

 

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, a former army captain elected last year, has long been sceptical of environmental issues, and has repeatedly said the Amazon is a resource that belongs to Brazil, which Brazilians should choose how to administer.

 

Asked about Germany's decision, Bolsonaro replied to journalists on Sunday: "Brazil does not need that."

Wonder how much money other countries have been contributing with?

The 67% figure may not be accurate. The Daily Telegraph from last week says the figure is 278% year-over-year in July and the head of the National Institute for Space Research was sacked for reporting these figures as it did not suit Bolsonaro's agenda

Since beginning the operation of the Amazon Fund in 2008, Norway has been by far the major donor (93 percent), but with Germany (6 percent), and Brazil’s state oil company Petrobras (1 percent). Together they’ve pledged $1.2 billion in voluntary donations.

From 2004 to 2017, there was an overall fall of 75 percent in deforestation levels.

But in 2016 deforestation increased 29 percent. In November 2018 there was another rise in deforestation of almost 14 percent. Norway may reconsider its amount of participation.
