TAT wants night-life establishments to close at 4 am to promote tourism

 

 

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to propose the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to extend the closing hours of night entertainment establishments by another t wo hours from 2 am until 4 am supposedly to promote tourism.

 

TAT Goveror Yutthasak Supasorn told the media about his proposal before a meeting with Tourism and Sports Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan about the proposal to extend the operating hours of night entertainment venues such as bars and discotheques by moving back the closing hours by two more hours to 4 am. He said he believes that this measure would stimulate spending by foreign tourists and would promote tourism industry.

 

The TAT governor has scheduled to visit Pattaya this coming Saturday to meet with operators of the night entertainment establishments to hear their views on his proposal. More field visits to the other cities across the country are on the drawing board.

So why was the decision made by government not long ago for early closing at midnight made. Is this a doubledown or backflip? Can't imagine all those families who venture to the family world holiday centre at Pattaya going to a bar until 4 am.

Way too sensible. But they've no idea how many toes they're stepping on - expect sideways posts soonest.

Recently TAT's obsession has been to up the number of quality tourists. How many of these will be out after 2am, risking their jewelry being snatched ?

If this is the answer, then why are bookings in Pattaya, where you can today drink 24/7 down so dramatically ?
Chinese and Indians do not go to bars in general. Koreans like early nights, and Farang are an endangered species who cannot make up the numbers.
Better idea, that will never be allowed. Legalise gambling and do the following :-
1.  Sell licences to the big hotel groups who can then build casinos on the back of their properties. Limit the number and sell by auction.
2.  Tax the earnings like hell.
3.  Like Singapaore, charge locals admission fees to counter the " he spent our savings " arguement.

4.  Crack down with an iron fist the huge number of existing back street dens, seizing all assets on the premises.

5.  Stand by for a Chinese invasion like they now have in Sihanoukville, but limit the number of establishments.

It's a sensible proposal. I was lucky enough to be a tourist and enjoy Bangkok before there were closing times. Bars stayed open as long as there were customers. Disco's, karaoke, restaurants, and such could be found that were open until daylight. The whole city was lively all the time. It was just wonderful to experience. Nights were so free and happy to experience.

 

In the 2000's they took the fun out of the city. People were carded everywhere to be 20+, alcohol could only be purchased during 2 short windows of the day, 5 baht karaoke booths in malls were outlawed, midnight to 1am closing times, many forms of entertainment banned, outdoor beer gardens banned, sexy beer uniforms banned, display of alcohol logos banned, massage parlors could not open until 5pm, discos frequently raided and patrons urine checked, and so on. I do not see these things as progress and prefer the old ways. It's refreshing to see Thai people can admit mistakes were made and try to make amends.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. The owners of these establishments has seen a drop in their secondary income and the brown envelopes are a lot thinner.

For years the government and many Thai people have been against the bars and massage parlours and late night closing. It was the government that brought in the midnight closing. That scared off a lot of "tourists" and now that Tourism is a major income for the debt ridden country,  they want to go ahead and almost have open all hours ! What will the Buddhist Hierarchy say about this ?  Tourists aren't really welcome, they are just there to be manipulated and ripped off !

is the logic that people will drink more because of an extra 2 hours, more people will go out because things are open later, or more tourists will come because of later opening bars? 

 

Might want to rethink all these Buddhist and election and birthday bar closings to really make it effective.

 

But personally, I don't see it making that much of a difference, and just causing more problems over a longer night...

A little late in the season ..........  What those clowns did not understand then is, that tourists are 1) grown-up people traveling to Thailand for a good time and a holiday and 2) usually come from societies where the state does not also dictate, how much toilet paper you are allowed to use per session.

I had friends coming on a holiday and luck had it, that they had two booze-free weekends and a booze-free weekday due to pre- and election weekend and a Buddhist holiday in between. That, combined with the fact, that they were told when to retire for the day = they never came back. 

All this has nothing to do with "Thainess" it is nothing short of brute brachial force of "who is who on the banana boat"; booze is available in all other SEA places, irrespective of elections or cleric holidays. The government should be serving the people, its economy and well being - but it seems that I am understanding all wrong once it comes to Thailand.

PS; I shouldn't be amazed and yet ... I never cease to be amazed at the sheer collective idiocy of the people that make these decisions. Individually perhaps they are brilliant minds and yet collectively they have proven time and time again that paper bag, wet or not ... no way they will ever find their way out IMNSHO

Can still drink booze those days. Buy it early or from small shop.
