Rayong cake shop goes green with banana leaf

A well-known cake shop in Rayong is joining the green trend by wrapping its creations in banana leaf instead of plastic. 

 

Pattanaree Tangjitueaboon, owner of “Rabbit Mafia”, said she opened the shop 10 years ago after graduating from Bangkok University, adding that she named the business after the nickname she was given in university. 

 

In a small effort to reduce plastic pollution and because there are plenty of banana trees in her backyard, Pattanaree chose to start using banana leaves and selling her delicacies as “green cakes”. She said that she may have to buy banana leaves in the future, but plastic costs money as well. 

 

As for the customers, they are delighted with the banana wrapping, saying this is not just eco-friendly, but also the banana leaf also adds a unique Thai fragrance to the western dessert. The owner also said that most of her customers want her to continue using banana leaf, and are calling on other cake shops to do the same.

Terrific banana wrappings, plastic straws, waxed drink container ( not recyclable ) , good start, but take an overall look.

Bamboo sustainable, recyclable or compostable, much better alternative for food and drink containers, as well as disposable cutlery.

Good move. Bamboo could also be made into disposable spoon for even hot drinks.

Bamboo in China are said to grow about 2 inches within 24 hours. So there is no shortage of bamboo at this rate of growth.

Bamboo leaves could also be used as plates for dried foods or cakes. They can be artistically folded and pin together to form a nice shape for cakes or other pastries.

Thailand should start this trend for other asian countries to follow.

Farmers can grow bamboo for income to supplement the low price of rice.

It bamboo and banana leaves be made to replace plastic that is the big question.

If say 80 percent of the plastic could be replaced by these bamboo and banana material then we see a good future for a green planet.
