A Japanese man, 76, was found dead in a rented house in Chiang Mai’s Muang district, where he was staying alone, police said.

The Mae Ping police station was alerted at 5.30pm on Thursday that the body of the Japanese man, 76, was found beside his bed in a house in Moo 4 village, Tambon Sun Phisua.

Police checked the room and did not detect any foul play. All the man's belongings remained tidily kept and there was no sign of any fight or break-in. Police also found Bt40,000 in cash the man had under his mattress and in a drawer at his bed.

A doctor performed an initial autopsy at the scene and did not find any trace of Nori being harmed. The doctor determined that Nori died at least three days earlier.

A maid had gone to clean the house at 4.30pm and called out to the man, but he did not answer so she entered the house and was overcome by a strong stench. She then called the police.

The maid told police that the man lived alone in the house and his relative lived in another rented house next door, but the relative had returned to Japan a month ago to receive a medical treatment.

The Japanese man's body was sent to the Chiang Mai provincial hospital for an autopsy.
