Thai Ladies in LOS vs Home Country

Well, it's hard to look down on the many Thai girls who resort to less than desirable work to support their families.  Unless during their early years their families have the financial resources to send them to institutions where they can obtain the education necessary to obtain decent jobs with an adequate income stream there is little choice for them.  Many schools do not teach anything of the world beyond the borders of Thailand.  They know very little if anything about the outside world.  So many young ladies I have met over the years really want to relocate but they have absolutely no concept of how expensive things can be in other countries.  They surely do not understand why we pay taxes in our home countries.  Those taxes pay for a proper police force that enforces to laws, especially the traffic laws that contribute to the safety of everyone.  They pay for us to have excellent fire protection services.  And we have ambulances that are basically hospitals on wheels staffed by highly trained and competent medical professionals instead of pickup trucks fitted with a camper shell to transport sick or injured persons.  In schools they are taught very little about what we call 'life skills' in particular, money management and how to plan and live on a budget.  Last about this they do not understand that the overall economy in many countries requires both a working husband and a working wife to maintain a financially stable and suitable lifestyle with the 'extras' they have seen on TV.  People are aghast here when I have told them in my country I have paid as much as $500.00 a month for household water and for trash removal and that the plate of 50 baht cow phat here can cost $10 to $12 dollars or more at a restaurant in the USA.

 

Then there are the very close family ties that exist here.  In my day it was normal for a young man and many women to enter the working world immediately after high school or college.  Many move out on their own at this time.  Most work part time jobs well before their education is complete and often beginning at age 16 or even before in some cases enabling them to establish a 'work ethic'.  This is not even an option here.

 

Finally, they miss their close and even extended families and often may want at least a once a year trip to come visit them not caring about the costs involved in doing this.  They may not have easy access to their favorite foods.  There may not be Thai temples close by for them to go and pray.  And, as others have stated they will migrate into any existing Thai community often learning things that do not contribute to their successful and happy integration into the local community.

 

Yes, I do know of several who have moved to new countries and who continue to have meaningful and successful lives there.  I also know of many who have attempted to make the move and were separated from their husbands and back in Thailand in a year or less.  It is not an easy change for them to make and it takes an unusual and typically well educated Thai woman to make it work and a special man who is able to help in their adjustment to their new world.

 

Good luck to those of you who attempt bringing your Thai wife/GF to your home countries.  In the current situation here I am also aware I could be forced to leave Thailand.  I have a retirement income that is worth 17 to 20 percent less than it was just a few years back, I am at an age if forced to buy or otherwise fund expensive and useless Thai health insurance  (I do have my own from the military) and due to other changes that are taking place the time may come that I cannot continue to live here.  I have a Thai wife and step daughter and even in my own country my income would be unable to provide adequately for them.

From my own experience........I believe I did the best option for me.....

Moved my wife to the UK as I needed to keep working, she went to college to pass English exams .

When we are in the UK She likes to work and earns her own money which supports the family etc.

It is quite tough, especially for the foreigner for the first few years, but if they stick it out and the cold - it worked for me .

Have a bit of snow and that keeps them happy for months !!!!!

Now we live between both countries, My wife likes to be employed whenever we go back to the UK......She can converse  fluently in English

This is an interesting read....The first Thai women I became involved with were in the US....It was almost a closed society/club & outsiders (usually single farangs) had to be brought in/vouched for before inclusion into the parties, dinners, activities within the social circle....They are a close knit group that included a wat visit on the requisite Buddha days.....The women were good wives & loyal with their husbands....They seemed happy with their circumstances....If they weren't, matchmaking was built in & within short order another fill in the _______ Was usually available almost instantly.....Worked both ways though.....

I had to chuckle about this.

 

We had a bunch of young Thai's on temporary work visa's over the summer working at our local Safeway.

 

My wife took them under her wing, as Thai often do, providing them with Thai food etc.

 

Then one Sunday I was listening to her try to explain the deductions on their paychecks, and what they were for.

 

It was like she was talking to aliens, they really struggled with why you pay tax and what does that money pay for.

 

She actually used one of the examples you did. In Thailand, if you are in a car crash the guys that come to 'save' you are just a bunch of well intentioned amateurs. 

 

She tried to explain what a first responder was here and why that costs money.

I was once with my gf in Penang, Malaysia, on a visa run.

She ordered Tom Yam Gung in the hotel restaurant.

She didn't received what she ordered. Probably she lost 2kg in 3 days.

She didn't ask me again to visit any other country...

 

That is obviously only a single case with my gf. But it seems to me many Thais have absolutely no idea of the world outside of Thailand. Different climate, different food, different language, no somtam vendor on every street corner. Shocking!

 

But obviously your girl might be different. ????

It’s not easy for anyone moving to another country without being 

totally committed. It’s a different world on both sides of fence. 

 

For Thai Mama and Papa living in the countryside helping a little 

financially won’t hurt and be somewhat our responsibility.
