Do you like Thai people?

What we're really talking about is not "Thai people" but subcultures... and Thailand has many who don't have much in common with each other within Thailand itself. There are lots of subdivisions within Thailand, and they often don't mix or don't mix well. As "farang" we are also a minority subculture, and are more likely to identify with similarly peripheralised subcultures than others, but the moment you start saying I don't like X-people, you'll meet one, who is irritatingly nice and ruins your whole stereotype.

 

We all build up rules-of-thumb about various ethnic groups or nationalities based on experiences so far, and they will always be limited by us ourselves and the situations we put ourselves in.

Those are just people with nationalistic feelings, its is more prevalent in some countries then others. Its like they get pride from belonging to a country. I see it a lot on Thaivisa too, bashing other countries thinking theirs is perfect. Nationalists are usually not fun people.

Most Thai women will tell you how much they can't stand Thai men.  I don't need to go through all the attributes attached to them, but they are mostly not good.

 

So why would this poster be surprised that most foreigners have the same opinion of Thai males?  

 

I have to say I have had some decent Taxi drivers recently even though their driving skills suck, but it is the male we come in contact with, who tries to cheat us in Taxis.  It is the male who sits in the 7/11 drinking 4 bottles of Chang, then off on his motorbike to kill someone or himself.  I have never seen a woman do the same.

 

I could go on and on, but I won't.

My girlfriend was very surprised that I do not like beer, and that I am used to work all day. She thought that most foreigners spend all day in a bar drinking beer and never work. Her female friends had the same prejudice.

 

My opinion about Thai people...  Usually they are ok.  The ones I know are a bit lazy. Things never get finished. I notice that they do not care about the environment. And are often not very capable to do their job right. They usually don't take responsibility if things go wrong. I am not sure, but I think this has to do with culture and a work environment where own initiative and taking responsibility are not appreciated.  

 

As a result, things like customer service aren't great either. I really hate that if I have a problem, someone is laughing without doing anything.

 

Oh, and where I come from we say:  "Only stupid people laugh without reason."

Spend a bit of time in Jakarta, and you'll think customer service and attitudes to pollution in Bangkok are fantastic.

From my experience, Thai people lie more often than not.  I'm told it is a way of saving face.  Most decent people cannot stand liars.  I have been lied to by Thais so often, that I just assume if they are talking, they are lying. 

 

That is from experience.  The wife lies and then lies about lying, she says, it is the Thai way.

 

Why should I argue this fact?

You're wrong.  Most women, not bar-girls, will happily tell you of their distrust.  This goes for professional women as well.

Wow and here I am asking the Thai ladies "which one number 1 for Thai" when in the detergent or sauce aisles of a supermarket.

 

I mean, Im not going to ask a Thai what the best cheddar is, but surely they know their Oyster Sauce better than I. I have even had two of them argue over it. Sometimes I even get the concern: "maybe too strong for farang". Thats sweet that they worry.

I like Thai people the same way I like most people ….  respect is something that is earned, and generally if a Thai person expresses a certain level of respect then I in turn show courtesy and respect to them.

I have several Thai friends that I like alot and always appreciate their company when we go have food & drinks.

There are good and bad farangs, there are good and bad Thais.

There are good and bad farangs in my home country as in most countries.

I don't tell Thai people what I think of them, I don't speak with them at all, it would never come up.

My interactions with the general Thai population is of the, "how much is that?", "I'll have a hot Latte" variety.

I also don't believe the OP is anything but an elderly white expat playing a game.

 

Don't get me wrong, I don't much like expats, Viets, Khmer either, I have no use for anyone (except immediate family).

I prefer to interact with people on forums, where I can turn them off whenever I feel like.

My soi has no name.  Just a house number, moo number and ampur name.  I accept that if it makes sense to the people that deliver mail etc to me. I got a call from DHL 5 days ago and was told they had a package for me and could I send my location to the number they were calling from.  I complied. 5 hours later...no package. I then see an email from them requesting I share my location via google maps. I comply...next day no package.  4 days later I see they have enter a shipping status at the merchant website that says "Customer requested rescheduling".  Seeing this was not going to get resolved, I search for the DHL office near me and take a drive there, the shop is marked with company logos etc.  They tell me I am at the wrong location and I should drive to a nearby landmark and look for their associates office at a shop that has no markings.  I go to the landmark and search all over asking shop owners in the area if they know where DHL is and no one does. I call the number they gave me at the first office.  DHL employee answers and I ask where she is and tell her I believe I am somewhere near her.  She says she will step onto the sidewalk so I can see her.  It turns out I am literally parked in front of the office which has zero markings of any kind.  I relay this story to her and she says "We couldn't find your house".  I point to the soi opposite her office and tell her "That's my soi right in front of your office.  You could have walked two minutes to my house.  I was not angry or even surprised. This type of thing happens every day all day at every business. Their systems don't work, the employees don't care, the corporation doesn't care, the governments local and national don't care, there's no logic or motivation behind anything everything is just a big bowl of random actions followed by repeated failures that are never learned from mixed in with heaping helpings of corruption ,xenophobia, racism and greed that trickle from the top down.  I have learned to accept that I live in a country where no one surpasses the brain function of a ten year old and just roll with it.

Yes, there is a small percentage of angry/racist/ bigoted foreigners on ThaiVisa.

In America, where I came from , over 61,000,000 people voted for Trump.  A large percentage of those voters only like other white european Americans, are homophobic, racist, etc...

America has tens of millions of Latinos, Asians, and Africans citizens, all taking offences from other American citizens. 

 

So be glad your Thai neighbors are not making offence to your family as is happening in America 

 

As long as Thai people like and respect Thai people you can have a happy life.

I think foreigners are generally more openly critical of many things, whereas Thais tend to stay quiet and pretend it doesn't bother them (even though it does). We are raised to be more open about our feelings, discuss things etc.

 

So when Thai people hear us complain about Thailand or Thai people, they are very offended and they don't realize that we often complain even more about our own countries and countrymen. That doesn't mean we don't like Thai people, we just feel it's OK to talk openly about their negative side.

 

For example. I might discuss that in the last 12 months...

 

1. My Thai girlfriend had her life threatened by a neighbor for measuring her land correctly after they were stealing it from her by pushing the border with their tractor.

2. Her dog was run over by a neighbour who then did not stop and simply left it in agony on the side of the road with a broken leg and huge flesh wounds. The neighbour later admitted she knew she had hit it but was "too busy" to inform us.

3. Another dog was poisoned less than 12 hours after a neighbour had threatened to kill it for chasing her chickens which had roamed onto our land.

 

These are just factual things that happened. Stating them openly does not mean I do not like Thai people, some are awesome and some are nasty.

 

I tend not to discuss it with Thai people though, as they take it very personally if you suggest that Thai people are not all fantastic, Thailand No. 1 etc. I do see that changing though, I have Thai friends where I work in Bangkok who now holiday in Japan, Korea, Singapore etc. and are more open to criticizing elements of Thailand or Thai people which do not compare favourably to their Asian counterparts (road manners, governance, public transport, air quality etc.)
