In response to the OP. . . Sorry I don't have time to read through this entire topic, but the above quotation is probably the most important for you to comprehend. It is correct for you to highlight the fact that most Thais never come into contact with Farangs. This is not their fault, or the Farang's fault. Now I know that my following statement will upset a lot of people, I think what everyone needs to remember, be they Thai or Farang, is that in many ways, Thailand is a very primitive society. Yes, you have mobile phones, broadband internet, toilets that flush yadda yadda. . . . . but this is just a very thin veneer. Farangs, even those that have been here as long as I have, find this very difficult to realise. Rote education, primitive superstitions, weak and corrupt judiciary, a general lack of understanding of the outside world, even though the sum of human knowledge is available to them via the internet, it will take generations to shift this. . . . .

 

Now, pair this up with the undeniable fact that a large percentage of Farangs in Thailand are bitter old men, for whatever reason, that are stuck in their ways and thought processes, well, just do the maths, you will have a clash of culture and understanding. A good example is Farang attitude towards Thai police. In my line of work I have dealt with the Thai police numerous times, difficult customers, vandals, that sort of stuff. I KNOW BEYOND ANY DOUBT that there are police officers that truly want to be good police officers, but they are let down by the system. This is my opinion, other foreigners will just tell you all Thai police are cr@p. One of my staff is a retired police officer. He's a good man, reliable, law abiding and loyal.

 

My own Thai stepdaughter, who is also a British citizen. . . . I confess to telling her, in my own words, that she is better than the majority of those around her, more sophisticated. I'm not sure if I should say that to her, but it is my belief. She spent her childhood years in the UK, and she says she feels more British than Thai. Her English is perfect, yet her Thai teachers still insist they can correct her English, even though they have the English of a five year old. This is the sort of attitude that angers me. There is absolutely NOTHING her teachers can teach her about English, yet they feel compelled, feel sufficiently arrogant, to tell her otherwise. My daughter will learn to question what she is told, by hook or by crook, that is what she will learn.

 

I've encountered a lot of Thais that have their own preconceptions about me and my wife. Invariably, they are young Thai working class men. This is just an observation, not and argument. Most other Thais just asked me why I didn't apply for citizenship yet.

 

These are just some random thoughts. I hope they help Yinn in some way.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't know where to start on this one. Not even all Thai people like other Thai people. I also find the argument logically flawed in that one person can supposedly speak on the behalf of the entire Thai collective.

This is a forum and often not a serious one. It is often the case that someone may spout off , before they have had their morning caffeine intake. Fatal mistake!

Just as Thai's often post bizarre inanities on Facebook , so do the "farang" on TVF.

I've got a Thai cycling pal, taught English for 30 years before retiring, can't speak one word of English.

Being at 16 pages and your numerous replies I'll answer your question at face value. I like at least one Thai person, my wife. Excuse me if I say I like her very much.

 

Her family? My 22 month step-grandchild is the cutest little Thai on the planet, My mother-in-law has no teeth and she's almost as cute as her great grand daughter.

 

My neighbors? Pee Law is absolutely grand. Yeah, I like her too. The (pejorative deleted) GENTLEMAN 3 doors down? May he rot in eternal hell. LOL. But hey, somebody must like him so we'll just put that one behind me.

There are a few French here also, I get on with all of those that I have met, some have become good friends.

Speaking in general terms, which is what the OP said she was doing on page 1....  in between the barbs may lie some truth.  A cultural trait that seems to be fairly universal across many parts of Asia, including across to SW Asia, is an aversion to hard truth/criticism and in a similar vein, accepting responsibility/loss of face.   Hell, even my President seems afflicted with this immature character trait, and a familiar penchant for suing people over it.  

 

Bear in mind, just because you are Thai who joined an English language, anonymous chat forum, you are under no obligation to take responsibility for Thailand's pros and cons, or get offended on behalf of all Thai people.  

 

There's the Real World and then there's ThaiVisa Fake World.  Keep the separation clear and never allow the latter to affect your mood in the former.

Nearly 15 years up for me in Thailand now, and i have never seen any off what he describes.
Ok, Maybe some one-off very minor occurences, and the odd ex girlfriend drama ( to be expected!)

 

But nothing to the level of what he describes, and cerainly none of this hate directed personally at me, like he imagines/has had.

If he has actually experienced ANY of those things, id say theres a good chance it was his shเtty attitude that instigated the ill-treatment in the first place.

 

Act like a <deleted> in someone elses country and you are sure to get cut down eventually.

So Yinn, keep doing what you are doing and continue be friends with farangs
while we all think, learn and respect each other together.

There are many, MANY more people who like and really appreciate you and Thais like you and love living here.

As humans, we ALL have faults, no-one is perfect,
but we can learn about our differences and respect them.

 

Hating is just the easy escape route that simple minded people use to try and fake how superior they are!

Recently i had a bottle of baby oil in a shop that slipped out of fingers, it was cheap quality knock off and i think the plastic was already cracked, it didn't drop far, it should not have splatter the way it did. I was a 304 shop of something. I told the women and thought that would be it, they would clean it up. But she freaked out and demanded i pay for it. Then she threatened to call the police (again.) I was a scam for sure. Conflicts with Thai's happen all the time.

Go to Cambodia people are friendly nice easy going etc.

Not a scam, in Thailand you break something in the store you pay!
