Egat driving project to convert conventional cars to electric ones

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) is studying how to develop a low-cost electric car battery to make it much more affordable for car owners who want to convert their vehicles to electric ones, said assistant governor for Research, Innovation and Business Development Jiraporn Sirikum.

 

The move is part of the state agency’s EV Kit & Blueprint Project in cooperation with the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre and the National Science and Technology Development Agency.

 

The project aims to enable Thais to convert their old cars into electric vehicles at a cost not exceeding Bt200,000 (excluding the price of the battery).

The project has three phases.

 

The first phase (2010-2016) has been completed, with the conversion of some Honda Jazz and Toyota Vios models into electric cars.

 

The second phase, with a budget of Bt60 million, began in 2017 and will be completed next year. 

 

The third phase is set to begin next year.

 

After this last phase is completed, the project will come out with a blueprint, which will be the standard for conversion of conventional cars into electric vehicles. It will subsequently seek out qualified car repair garages and provide knowledge to them in installing the EV kits.

At our house we've had 74 power outages in six years.

It makes you wonder about the reliability of an electric car they might design.

Hahahaha .. will some take that literally and try 3 phasing their old motor .. Without wishing to p*ss on the fireworks converting old combustion engined vehicles to full on electric is not an easy task and has many side considerations :- like I C engined vehicles have different wiring looms , Engined vehicles need brake assistance generated by engine vacuum on pet' engines and a vac' pump on diesels .. power steering which most cars have with a lot needing a pump driven by an engine .. E V's are designed from start to be that .. they are not converted from models that previously had I C engines ..

Nah. There must be an easy way to fit 4 washing motors to the wheels. Performance might be compromised so replacing the speedo with a calendar would fix that.

If it was at all viable....it would already have been done and dusted.

It seems so obvious that none of these people actually comprehend what would be involved?....I doubt any of them have looked under a car hood!

there was a couple of years ago, a US based project; that you convert say your car into a Hybrid instead.  

It was basically a 'fit 2 washing motors'   system. 

For a FWD car, you would be placing these hub style motors to the rear wheels only. 

A tight fit between the wheel and it's hub 

All powered only while the IC was turning and burning 

Can see many downfalls, if one considers someone trying to further retrofit this concept to run on battery alone - considering Auto trans damage if running off batts whilst the IC Off

I had an idea years ago to place a DC motor/generator inline with the driveshaft of a rear wheel drive vehicle to produce a DiY hybrid from an ordinary I/C vehicle. Of course, batteries would have to be installed somewhere and powering the driveshaft motor would have to be sync'd with the I/C engine, etc. Placing the motor/generator where it would clear the car's chassis/frame is ONLY ONE of the problems with this concept. For front wheel drive vehicles ... hmmmm, let me think. Maybe someone out there has already implemented this idea.

 

It would be conceptually like the nowadays electrically-assisted bicycles that maintain the original gearing by installing a hub motor/generator (motor/gen for regenerative braking) and a battery and controller. It's a very common setup and kits are sold to electrify a pedal bicycle, yet maintain the ability to pedal with the bike's original gears. In fact one are two of these electrified bicycles are for sale on craigslist/thailand.

Yes, but the people who bought electric cars also put solar panels on their roofs (because California, like Thailand, raises your unit price of electricity as you use more, so getting an electric car and not putting solar on your roof there is dumb.) And those who installed a home battery as well, if they installed a big enough battery and inverter to handle their air-con, are basically unaffected by the power cuts.

 

By the way - in California where the power is out - guess why a lot of the "gas" stations aren't working. I'll give you hint, the pumps work off something... - begins with an "E". People are literally running generators off aviation fuel from the local airfields (we're talking fuel for Cessnas, not Boeings) because they can't get regular gasoline. And if you didn't already have a generator - sorry, but they're all sold out...

Thailand passed a law that all electric vehicles must have a noise making device turned on while moving for safety reasons. Sad to say, this is not a joke.

They already convert collection vehicles to electric. It's very nice and performant but not cheap.

Yes, but the people who bought electric cars also put solar panels on their roofs (because California, like Thailand, raises your unit price of electricity as you use more, so getting an electric car and not putting solar on your roof there is dumb.) And those who installed a home battery as well, if they installed a big enough battery and inverter to handle their air-con, are basically unaffected by the power cuts.

I don't count the outages at my house but we have several brownouts each and every day.  Obviously the generating capacity is not available for EVs if they can't supply power enough for a few light bulbs, the odd refrigerator and maybe a few A/C units.
