totally agree with post 3, i have 3 sets of friend who use to come every year and spend big money, stay for a month, well i wont be seeing them again, they let it be known. i wonder how many of us here, are in the same boat, quite sad really.

Yeah and the Immigration still keep on hounding the North American, EU and the down under crew so we don't even make the list anymore. They need to quit their whining and be more reasonable again. After all, they need to remember who helped make their country.

Considering it is early part of high season there has been a up tick in tourism in and around Chiang Mai. More farangs around the old city as well as Chinese. Lets see what happens in Nov. and Dec. that is the truth in the pudding.

The best ambassadors to promote a country are expats living in that country. Make changes that impact their lifestyle detrimentally, do little to nothing about overcharging, filthy beaches, foul air, piles of rubbish everywhere and a seemingly general attitude of increasing xenophobia with authorities and there is little wonder that tourist numbers are down. Blame currencies...much easier.

Good point. I'd be really <deleted> off if I owned a property here and was denied a visa, or required to purchase insurance.

Thailand have never cared for the tourist/long stayers they already have.

 

They only care about new tourists - tourists that add to that magical, bonus inducing number each year for the TAT. They care not for where they come from, quality or spend...they are fixated on an artifical number that they think will cure all...

 

This is why I take great pleasure in watching tourism crumble before their eyes and the ensuing panic of trivial tinkering to try and revive it. Personally, I think Thailand has peaked and there are better value and exotic locations out there that actually value tourism.

 

Thailand will always have tourists, the slow end of the tourist travelers that rely on dated and creative images of past glory...but even they will only come once.

 

That flawed model of always having to find new tourists is slowly killing Thailand...

I guess the other thing is that tourists, if they are paying top dollar, might like a little oxygen in the air rather than the worlds worst pollution.  They may even like a little less plastic and garbage in the water and on the beaches.... Maybe?? ????

I feel sorry for the good Thais who do their best to welcome foreign visitors, but it's undeniable that tourism has peaked several years ago, and is quickly going downhill, thanks to the greed and the bad planning of few.

Let's cherish the good memories, where there once were pristine beaches, there are big, ugly concrete boxes, and rubbish is everywhere.

I see more smiles from the few tourists around than from the bored, disappointed shop keepers.

For those of us who like Thailand its still so easy to be critical of it they make it so easy

 

They forget easily the last financial Asian crash and Thailand was the most affected and if it happens again they will feel it more because each household debt is at its highest that it has ever been.

Instead of blaming currency, Thailand should pay attention to attitude of the government and locals towards tourists and other farangs. Current immigration situation does not contribute to tourism growth but the opposite. Don't be so naive. Everyone knows it and sees it, but you still blame high Thai baht.

2018 tat still with the creative accounting as chinese numbers start to tail off at 9 million inks dry on the contracts

2017  tat start double counting 8 million

2016 another 2 million chinese addon as rail contracts are sought

2015 the chinese climb  to 9 million

2014 one  million less westerners arrive

2013 chinese influx doubles

2012 3 million spike the chinese have arrived

2011 everything normal fair exchange rate mostly western
