Can a bulb burning out trip a breaker?

We had a Schneider circuit breaker installed a few months back and normally we leave a couple of lights on in the house at night for security purposes. As we are going away for a few days the missus is worried that if a bulb burns out causing the breaker to trip, all the food in the fridges will spoil. So, leave a light on or not?

It's theoretically possible that a breaker could trip when a light bulb burns out. But there are bulbs with integrated fuses that will blow and leave your breaker and fridge on.

Highly unlikely that a blown bulb would trip a breaker.

 

Lights should be on a different circuit to power so even if it did trip it should not affect the fridge.

 

For extra peace of mind why not use LED lamps, they will not blow. Now days you can get all sorts of LED's as straight replacements for regular bulbs.

I've certainly had the old incandescent bulbs sometimes go out with a load "pop" and the circuit breaker flips. But as said, lighting and kitchen sockets should not be hooked up to the same circuit breaker.

Why wasting money on electricity and let the light be on 24/7?

 

   Using intelligent bulbs would be the best solution. They go on when it gets dark and switch off at daytime. 

 

If you place them near a window people will think that you're at home.

Yes a blown lightbulb can surely trip the device metering that supply line!!! It could even cause the whole supply to trip. With or without crossed neutrals. 

 

Usually, lighting is monitored separately from a utility line.

It is possible that this happens. Perhaps a good idea to put the fridge or at least the wall sockets on a different circuit breaker. Some luxury homes even have circuit breakers on the room level...

Far better than that (which will make it quite obvious that the light is daylight sensitive, and who will think your at home with the light on at 3am) is to use one of the smart sockets like the one here

TP-Link socket. With that you set the period during which the socket, light, will randomly switch on and off. So different times but for example only between 7pm and 10:30.
