Suphachai Chearavanont

Council of Digital Economy and Society chairman Suphachai Chearavanont is pushing to transform Thailand into a more competitive country and promote the kingdom as a digital hub in the region.

He made his stand clear during his speech on “Bring a digital future to everyone: making changes to remap Thailand in the digital world” at the “Digital Thailand Big Bang 2019: Asean Connectivity” event, which is being held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre until October 31.

He said the urgent mission to keep up with changes is to set new standards and indicators for digital industries, encourage cooperation among various sectors, develop personnel with new skills, change the attitude of staff and support knowledge to prepare for a digital future.

“We will promote Thailand as a digital hub, supporting neighbouring countries and developing technologies to become more competitive,” he said.

“To achieve this mission, we have to change the digital infrastructure, open a way to draw investments for business, gain the trust and confidence of investors, create innovations and intellectual properties and go in for sustainable development where the environment and economy are concerned.”

Suphachai said information skills are important to keep up with changes, market trends and consumer habits. The new generation of organisations must drive business with information to increase accuracy and reduce errors and costs in business operations.

“Entrepreneurs must have a new vision to stay ahead and avoid relying on past success alone,” he added.

Hubs to the left of me.

Hubs to the right.

Here I am.

Stuck in the middle of Thailand .

I really do not know where to start... But I know where Thailand needs to start. If the IT programs at the universities here are not seriously overhauled, they will never have the talent to even catch up, let alone lead.

One of the country's worst and most frustrating features is its leaders' refusal to be humble and acknowledge their systemic shortcomings.

They seem generally unable to talk closer to reality.

And, if their talk wasn't frustrating enough, they routinely (daily) show off their gross incompetence at almost everything they do.

They make it incredibly difficult to respect anything they say.

I wonder if he even knows what he's talking about.

This morning, I got ticked off (again) because the water tap broke (again), after being repaired just a few months ago. Fortunately, my housekeeper came by early today and got someone to repair things early. Every time this happens, she just says one word: "Thailand."  This ain't gonna be no digital hub.

Entrepreneurs must have a new vision to stay ahead and avoid relying on past success alone,” he added.

Like the Thai tourist business?

"We will promote Thailand as a digital hub..."

Along with the headline, the photo makes him look like a magician at work:

"One - two - three... and... into a digital hub."

Recently after 9 years in Thailand I returned to the UK and was shocked at how nearly everything is done online. No tax disk on your car, if you need or want anything it is done online especially with the government. I do all my banking online from opening isa accounts, transferring money to paying bills and I no longer carry cash. A swipe of my card or even my watch (anything under £30) or by card. This includes coffee at a cafe or a beer in the pub. What a change. Sorry Thailand you are decade's away oh and my Internet actually works and is fast here and cheaper. I just don't understand when they go on about face all the time these idiots stand up and spout this utter rubbish.

How?  Sorry, nobody will believe you because it’s always talk, but no results-simply never learn.  It’s like the guy/girl that’s always talking about the great things they are going to do, but never manages to accomplish anything.  Everyone stops listening and believing eventually.

thailand 5.0:  hub of word salad.

are we at Thailand 7.0 yet?

No, still at Windows 7.

As usual, these guys are saying all the right things, however I guess there is no clear plan to do something like this.

They cannot even create a simple reporting app. Enough said!

Here is an Idea: Create a small business IT visa for digital nomads. As long as the income is all derived from outside of Thailand grant as many of these visas as possible.

Bringing the 5000 to 10000+ relatively highly skilled IT girls and guys that are already into the system =  the beginning of your hub.

chance of this happening = 0

chance of Thailand being a hub with local talent = 0
