Asean Summit

US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell arrived in Bangkok today (November 1) for a four-day schedule of bilateral meetings with Thai government officials and civil society organisations, as well as bilateral and multilateral meetings with regional partners on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit.

On November 3 and 4, Assistant Secretary Stilwell will join National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, who has been named by US President Trump as Special Envoy and head of the US delegations to the 7th US-Asean Summit and the East Asia Summit.

Stilwell will also join US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross at the second annual Indo-Pacific Business Forum on November 4.

In his meetings with Thai officials, Stilwell will discuss the broad and growing relationship between the two countries, including US-Thai security cooperation, expanding economic ties, promoting democratic governance and furthering cultural and educational exchanges. Assistant Secretary Stilwell will also reiterate Asean centrality as a core tenet of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

“I am pleased to return to Thailand for the third time this year to attend the US-Asean and East Asia Summits, the Indo-Pacific Business Forum, and to engage with our Asean partners. Our treaty alliance with Thailand and close partnerships across Southeast Asia remain key pillars of the United States’ commitment to the Indo-Pacific," he noted.

Buy more US made chemicals and buy coal, and we can be friends again.

For those who don't drink coffee yet, they may want to start before these meetings.

Wonder if he is the offspring of Vinegar Joe Stilwell.  Got nothing on Internet searches.  Old Joe got sent packing by Chennault during WW2.

And I was hoping it was trump himself visiting Aseans 3 biggest attractions, cowboy, nana and walking street

China walks hand in hand with Thailand now.  All western currencies have nosedived.  Economy here tanking.  Other than that--everything's fine.

Brings a smile to my face and warmth to my heart to realize the USA is at least making a show. Good on them for the effort.
