I know you need an activation code for Windows10, but having a spare laptop, is it free to download Windows8 and is it easy

to download it?

No Windows 8 is not free, but you can buy Windows 10 key for next to nothing.

The lead balloon Windows 8 voluntarily? Really?

Why don't you download W8.1 or indeed the latest version of W10 install and just don't activate?

One way to make Windows free if you can live without cosmetic changes, and a note in the bottom right of you desktop.

I've got plenty of keys, bought for 250 baht per key off ebay. Page me if you want one. Windows 10 Pro, I also have MS Office 2016 keys.

   Of course genuine.

I used Win 8.1 for years, resisting Win 10, then a software package I started using required Win 10. Win 10 is working more reliably, though as with every Micro$oft "improvement," there are minor annoyances. I'd recommend going straight to 10.
