Thai economy: It's so bad that folks are resorting to stealing coffins!

A coffin maker went to the media to complain after someone stole one of his most expensive coffins.

Jamnong Nangam, 50, blamed a rival business - and the state of the Thai economy - for his untimely loss!

But he won't make a police report considering it "merit making" not to do so. However he is installing CCTV - so would be coffin stealers be warned!

Jamnong runs the "Jamnong Long Thong" or "Golden Coffin" shop in Nangrong district of Buriram in Thailand's north east.

He told Daily News that he has had a lot of coffins stolen before but they were always the cheapest ones available for 600 to 800 baht. He reckoned the thieves were poor people so he didn't make a fuss.

But this time a 4,500 baht fancy one with all the trimmings had been pinched last Friday night.

He reckoned that the thief was another coffin maker in the trade who didn't have enough in stock. Either that or it was a sign of the terrible Thai economy these days.

Jamnong explained that he kept his shop open at night should anyone need a coffin. Customers would contact him over the phone and help themselves and settle their account later.

Because it was a coffin no Thai would dream of double crossing him - they always paid up.

But after the fancy coffin was taken last week he has received no call from anyone so assumed it was stolen.

Still, he hadn't gone to the police preferring to treat it as "tham bun" or making merit.

But there was a limit to how far his generosity would go  - he is installing CCTV and warning the public that in these tough economic times tough measures are necessary.

Perhaps they might 'double cross' him if they were a very devout christian? Or perhaps Irish - to be sure, to be sure.

Thais don't steal!

They borrow, but forget to give it back.

Why? Why should he?

OK; that's it for this week. They cremate their loved ones in a STOLEN coffin? Explains a lot about the social values in this beautiful country!

No theft in your country then!

If it's so bad, why not recycle them. Just flip the previous tenant to the BBQ and plop the next one in.

Too much fuss about disposing of human remnants.

There you are then. From the horse's mouth. Bound to be true.

Of course there is but a coffin? How would you feel putting a loved one to rest in a nicked box?
